Hearty and delicious! I omitted potatoes and added peas. I thickened it by mixing a cup of the stew liquid with three or even a little more tablespoons of flour and then adding it back into the stew. I served the stew over a bed of short grain brown rice. yummm.

This was delicious and the meat oooo so tender. I took others advice and used beef broth instead of water and also added a can of corn. Will definately make this again!

This is an awesome base recipe for beef stew. I wouldn't suggest making it with just the ingredients listed in this recipe alone; cause it really didn't have that old fashioned grandma beef stew taste. Instead of using 1 can of Golden Onion Soup, I used about 1 3/4 cans (of the small cans). Instead of using water I used beef broth made from beef bullion cubes. Instead of using regular Onion Soup Mix I used the Golden Onion soup mix. I also added some worcestershire sauce (not sure of the amount just poured some in), adobo (not sure of amount just sprinkled some in). I also added a package of McCormicks Beef Stew seasoning, which I think that is what the stew need to give it the flavor I was looking for. I also added more pepper. I didn't cook the stew overnight, I cooked it on high for about 6 hours and the stew came out fantastic. Like others I added some corn starch at the end to thicken up the sauce alittle bit as well. Both my husband and I loved it. I served with some biscuits on the side. OMG to die for... We are having left overs tonight. Definitely will make it again, and again.

Excellent! I halved the meat and doubled the potatoes and veggies. There is no reason to cook this for as long as the recipe calls for... I cooked on low for 9-10 hours and it was perfect. Much longer and the potatoes and carrots would have been nothing but mush. Thanks!

LOVED this stew--so much that so after I lost the recipe, I moved heaven and earth to find it again (long story). Like others, used beef broth and added peas at end. Started @ 10 p.m. and by 3 p.m. next day was begging husband to have dinner NOW because I was taste-testing my way to a meal anyway! My complaint with slow cooker recipes is that the veggies are often undercooked--no problem here. Didn't have celery so I used celery seed, also took a free hand with the spices to make it "ours". You should feel free to do the same as people's tastes vary, but this is an excellent place to start.

Omitted the onion soup mix and seasoned with garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper. Added a really big scoop of minced garlic. Didn't have the mushrooms so I omitted them. Used the water, plus some bullion AND some red wine for depth. Started it at 7am and was fall apart tender at 5:45. Perfect with homemade wheat bread. Thanks!

Quite good but not "Great!". Followed recipe but used beef boullion instead of water. Even though I cooked on low all nite/all day, meat was not as tender as I thought it would be, (a little 'stringy-tough'). Others liked it more than I.

It was fine, but nothing special. Everyone ate a bowl, but the leftovers are still in my fridge.

Good hearty stew even without the mushrooms (we didn't have any). Cooked up very quickly in the crock pot and had great flavor.

My first stew and it came out wonderful! I followed the recipe except omitted the onions. Onion soup mix was enough for me! I did add some flour in the last hour of cooking to make the "broth" thicker and it worked great. I only cooked it for 8 hours on low and it tasted just fine at dinner.

Very good! I did brown the meat before putting it in the crockpot, but otherwise followed the recipe. Wasn't sure about cooking it overnight, but it turned out wonderful. Great flavor!

This was pretty good. I reduced the water because I like a thick stew. It wasn't as good as my regular stew I make but definately worth making again!

Very, very good stew. My picky husband loved it and so did the kids. The meat just fell apart. The house smelled so good all night and day. Will definetely use this recipe again.

Added lots of extra carrots, potatoes, mushroom. Since I added the extra vegetables, it meant adding extra water/beef broth and that is why it came out a little thinner than I wanted. Added some cold water w/corn starch and it thickened up beautifully!! With all my extras, I fed 4 people last night, and me and my husband had lunch for today. I say prepare for a little more- if you need to feed 4, make either 5 or 6 servings. I cut a little bit of the meat out (it was too much the 1st time) and used beef broth and water (instead of just water) Cut up some French bread and it was amazing!!! But each to their own in the way they like it. It does not come out too oniony at all, like I could have added more onion!! The onion all disolved and so did most of the celery.
