This was pretty good. Still not my favorite bean recipe (I haven't found one yet!), but decent nonetheless. And might I add… THIS IS NOT CHILI! Think of this as a side dish you’d take to a cookout or serve with grilled meats or BBQ. My fiance & I BBQ'd for friends yesterday. This was the perfect complement to our grilled sausages, pub burgers, corn on the cobb, pasta salad & taffy apple salad (for dessert!). Not withstanding the temptation to “change things up a bit,” I too made some (slight) modifications. My fiance doesn’t care for beans, but will eat them on occasion. He definitely doesn’t like “sweet” bean dishes. To please his palate, I added a can of chili beans (medium heat) IN ADDITION TO my 15 oz. can of pork n’ beans. Since I thought 1.5 lbs. of ground beef was too much, I only used 1 lb. (my grocer carries 1 lb. pkgs. of beef, so that was another reason to cut some of it). My last modification was to substitute a sm. chopped yellow onion for the green pepper called for (I don’t like bell pepers in my beans or chili!). I chose to use maple-flavored bacon & am sooo glad I did (it was really good!). I ended up adding about 1/4 c. of brown sugar to my beans (they weren’t sweet at all w/o it, but after adding the sugar / simmering for another 1/2 hr., they were slightly sweet, but not enough to keep my fiance away – ha!). Thanks for sharing, DKUENSCH! The fact that this is so easy (hellooo slow cooker!) & cheap to prepare makes this a keeper in my book! :)
