way too sweet. tasted like seasoned ketchup sauce. to improve, use half the amount of ketchup and add a cup of crushed tomatoes or tomato sauce so the sauce isn't soo sweet. add 2tsp worcheshire, 1tsp vinegar, 1tbsp chili powder to add more depth of flavor. add onions & peppers in with the beef.

My husband grew up on sloppy joes and said these were very close to his Mom's! I followed the ingredients exactly but instead of simmering 30-40 min I used the pressure cooker on high for 6 min and it was perfectly thickened and the flavors had melded together wonderfully. Super fast and delicious.

Not impressed. It turned out too thick and saucy for my taste. Admittedly, I prefer my sloppy joes to have fresh onion and green pepper, so maybe that's my big issue. I made it exactly as listed. This recipe's best attribute were the simple ingredients. I was able to make it without a trip to the store!

My husband loved, loved, loved this! I hadn't made sloppy joes in years and since we've had to cut back on spending in recent months, my mind started going to recipes that were cheap and easy, so of course I thought of sloppy joes. i didn't want to buy the manwich stuff so i decided to go in search of an actual recipe and since my husband doesn't like anything with vegetable chunks i had to rule out several other seemingly good recipes on this site and settled on this one. I'm so happy I did! These were so good and so simple!!! the only thing I added was some shredded swiss on top of the mixture. mmm yum! this is a keeper!

Very picky husband loves it! I doubled the recipe and took some other reviewer's suggestions of adding 1 tsp each of chile powder and vinegar, plus I sauteed onion, green pepper & a garlic clove with the meat. I asked hubby to taste and tell me what else it needs...he excitedly replied NOTHING! He wasn't raised on home cooking, so he was pleasantly surprised that I could duplicate something that comes out of a can.

This had so much flavor, my kids ate it up. Here are some tweake I made: I used 1 lb. ground chuck, added 3 Tbsp. of water and some sweet and spicy barbecue sauce. From now on will make this version instead of can.

This is very, very tomato-y. It was sadly only a hit with our toddler. Husband said to never make it again, and I sadly have to agree. If you like manwich, this is not something you're going to like. There are other sloppy joe recipes out there that taste better.

I followed the recipe, and it was very good! I did add a small onion and half a green pepper to my ground beef when cooking. I did double everything except for the ground beef, when making for just hubby and I. I found there wasn't enough sauce for us. This is for sure "sweeter" than the canned sauces. I read most of the reviews, and we didn't think this was any better or worst then canned mix. I think it cost about the same, and actually when Manwich is on sale, it's cheaper to just use that. For us, we'll stick with the canned version, but this was easy to make.

I am NOT a sloppy joe type of person, but my kids love them. Normally I just make the name brand kind bought at the store, but since I discovered allrecipes.com I've tried making the majority of foods from scratch. These were FABULOUS! Even I went back for seconds! The only thing I did differently was add an onion and a few cloves of garlic (diced) to the meat as it was browning and a splash of vinegar with the ketchup mix. Absolutely perfect. I served over garlic toast with a fork to help keep the messiness down. Superb! I will definitely be making these again!

good recipe - a little on the sweeter side than I would prefer. Next time I will cut the brown sugar in half.

Doubled the recipe and followed it exactly. Am planning on serving it with home-made wheat hamburger buns, but if I keep tasting it as it simmers, there won't be any left for supper!

Maybe I made this wrong, but the sauce was too dry for me, unlike the manwich stuff. I will try adding more liquid ingredients next time.

This is a good go-to recipe. It seems awfully sweet to me, and I didn't even add the sugar. I think the fault may lie with my store-brand ketchup. So, my only advice to others would be to wait on adding the sugar until you taste all the other flavors together.
