I wish I could give this recipe more than 5 stars. I have been making it for over a year now and it has never failed me. Anyone who tries it tells me it's the best bread they've ever had and asks for the recipe. I did change the recipe a little...I add ALL wheat flour except one cup white, and I don't add the butter. I forgot the butter once, and neither my husband or I could tell a difference so I've been leaving it out ever since. Good luck and enjoy!

Absolutely wonderful. It is my family's favorite recipe and we love the simple ingredients. I do switch the white / wheat ratio. I add the 5 cups of wheat first ... then the rest in white flour

I have made this bread a few times now and It comes out great each time, the people that complain about it being two dense may have some of the following issues: your yeast is old, you dont use bread flour or you are over/underproofing your dough. I have figured out that bread is an art as well as a science and this bread, along with all the others takes patience. The part when you mix in the rest of the flour is where I have found most of my trouble, the perfect consistency comes and goes in an instant, for the beginnners add 1/4 cup of flour at a time, be sure to add less flour towards the end so you dont incorperate too much flour making the loaf too dry. even when my bread came out funny they still tasted great and went to good use for something else!

Very tasty and moist bread that stays fresh. I followed the recipe as written since there were a few good reviews about the original. I say that because I'm always amazed at reviews that say, oh, I changed this ingredient and that method, etc, etc....if you do that, you're not making the same recipe so what good does your review do?! Kudos to Nita for a good, easy bread recipe. I've made it every weekend for the last 3 weeks and will probably be making more today. My family loves it!

I have to agree with everyone else. This is a fabulouse recipe! I grew up with homemade bread and have my mother's recipe, which is similar, but the method here is slightly different. I increased recipe for 4 loaves. My last batch turned out just like the photo, in my convection oven. Today I am adding 1 cup powdered milk as my mother's recipe suggests, and as I have read elsewhere for increasing nutritional value and preservation time. I also add 1/2 cup wheat gluten with the second flour addition. I plan to try 100% home ground whole wheat soon. I really enjoy reading others' reviews and tips, esp. for freezing loaves for future baking.

I'm a novice bread baker and this recipe was simple and yielded delicious results! There's nothing as good as home made bread. Chewy, moist, flavorful. I liked this better than the "Amish White Bread" recipe that I tried a couple of months ago.

This is delicious. I divide by 3 and make a single loaf by mixing, kneading and knocking down the dough in my bread machine. It turns out great!

UGH, I am such a dunce with bread making. I think I made my warm water TOO warm and killed the yeast because my bread would not rise. The taste is amazing though, and I'm sure if I was a better bread maker, this would have been a beautiful fluffy loaf and a favorite bread recipe! ;)

I do not like whole wheat bread and have been baking white - however my husband does prefer whole wheat bread so I tried this recipe. I cannot believe that I prefer this to the white I have been making. My son-in-law and grandkids were here last night and they also enjoyed it! BTW - I did not have bread flour and used all purpose and it still turned out great. I also divided into three and the one loaf I made was neither small or dense (cooked on a pizza stone not in a bread pan) I have the rest of the dough in my fridge but I'm sure it won't last long. Followed recipe exactly except I always give my bread a second rise before shaping for final rise.

So delicious! I have been trying to find a wheat bread that has a sandwich bread consistency and still tastes good and this is better in both categories than anything I have tried!

This yields a delicious denser bread. I did not use white bread flour, but a whole wheat bread flour. I don't know what happened but my loaves wound up being a little bit smaller, even after allowing plenty of rising time. Possibly my yeast was getting old, but I will try again. Either way, it didn't affect the taste, just the height. Delicious warm and with butter.
