Simple Sausage Strata

INGREDIENTS

  • 6 slices bread, crust removed
  • 1 pound bulk pork sausage
  • 1 teaspoon prepared mustard
  • 3/4 cup shredded Swiss cheese
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 2/3 cup half-and-half cream
  • 1 pinch pepper

DIRECTIONS

  1. Place bread in a greased 13-in. x 9-in. x 2-in. baking dish; set aside. In a skillet, cook sausage over medium heat until no longer pink; drain. Stir in mustard. Sprinkle sausage and cheese evenly over bread. In a bowl, beat eggs, milk, cream and pepper. Pour over cheese. Bake, uncovered, at 350 degrees F for 25-30 minutes or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean. Cut into squares; serve immediately.

I have a recipe very similar to this; I do everything as suggested here except I use a mix of cheddar and moz. cheese and add just a half a cup or so of milk to my eggs and no mustard. I layer bread first, then sausage, then cheese then pour egg mixture over all and bake. This dish should not be soggy. Tastes yummy!
