I found the cake too dry for my own taste, otherwise it's ok. I wouldn't make this again.

I used this recipe for the cake only. It was wonderful. The cake should be treated like a pie crust and kept cold and handled as little as possible. I pressed it down in the pans with a cold spoon and not my hands as they are enough to melt the butter. We loved the fluffy soft cake and the cruncy mereingue on the top. Thanks for a great recipe!!

Everything worked out great. The cake was delicious, and it cooked fine. I made my own whipped cream and smothered it with that and freshly picked strawberries. I usually don't like the shortcake half of "strawberry shortcake" but i found myself searching out the shortcake with this recipe.

Very good. Even my mom liked it-- a miracle! Yes it was crumbly, but I fixed that by poking holes in the layers as I was going and then after the whipped topping was applied; they allowed all the strawberry juice to sink in. And def. don't use store brought whipped whatever the heck it is...I wish I wasn't so lazy. I would use 4 generous ts of baking powder as well. Hm, I don't really understand the whole beaten egg whites and sugar crust on top of the layers...didn't seem to add much.

I can't give it really any stars until tonight when it'll be tried at my bbq - then I will update it. I made the cakes last night, forgeting the baking powder - which just means it didn't rise as much. Later today I will assemble it and hopefully the extra creamy cool whip and strawberries will make it a hit.

Delicious. I made this exactly as written and it was wonderful. It was not at all dry like others have had problems with and everyone in the family loved it.

We loved this recipe. The strawberries, cream, and cake itself went brilliantly together. It was fairly easy to make, though took a bit of time. Never made meringue before, yet had no trouble with it. Note: I did not put any sugar on the strawberries, but accidentally put 1/2 cup sugar on the meringue as opposed to 1/4 cup (I found this a tad sweet, but my girlfriend loved it as-is). I used the recipe for sweetened cream from this site, which was also great but a tad sweet. I only cooked for about 30-35 mins, and so had no problems with dryness. I also followed other reviewers' suggestions and mixed the batter as little as possible, and so had no issues with crumbliness. My girlfriend is already bugging me to make this cake again (it's been only 3 days)!

Loved the crunchy top of the meringue and sugar on the shortcake! Cut recipe in half for a one layer cake and it was gorgeous and delicious! Put a dollap of whipped cream on top center of stawberries and put some blueberries on it, instead of mint. Great presentation and super delicious!

This was okay..I would never add that much sugar, only a couple of TBS to strawbrries with some blasamic vinegar. I was talking on the phone and wasn't paying attention to seperating eggs..so there was no meringue, but probably wasn't needed any ways. Just a couple of TBS. of sugar in cake too. Served with real whipped cream and fresh mint. I think grated lemon would be good too.

My husband ate half of this in one night! I cut back on the sugar quite a bit and it still tasted delicious. I also mixed the all-purpose flour with whole wheat; that gave it a nice color. This recipe is definitely getting added to the repertoire.

This was very good. I made it exactly as written and found it a little too sweet... would probably cut back on the amount of sugar next time (at least in the strawberries and sprinkling over the meringue, the pastry wasn't really overly sweet) It was not crumbly for me, a little crispy maybe, but I think that was the meringue/sugar topping. Overall I think I still prefer a poundcake (with all the juices soaking in) for strawberry shortcake, but this was nice for something different (and for those who prefer a biscuit type pastry) It is also very pretty and "company" worthy :)

This was very dry and not what I was hoping. The nutmeg gave it a strange flavor for a shortcake to me. I will not be making this recipe again.

I made this cake for the Jewish New Year. Strawberry Shortcake is my FIL's favorite dessert and it was a huge hit! I made it with the sweetened Whipped cream from this site and it was out of this world! Thanks for the recipe!

This was a wonderful strawberry shortcake. My kids and husband loved it. I did however cut back on the sugar only using 1/2 cup and it still tasted great! My family is already asking me when I am going to make it again. Thank you.
