frozen cooked meatballs
hoagie buns, split
shredded pizza cheese blend or mozzarella cheese
Garnishes, if desired:
Green or red bell pepper, cut into thin strips
Thinly sliced sweet onion
This was OK, but I wouldn't say it was outstanding. I know Progresso won't like hearing this, but I didn't find much to differentiate their Fire Roasted Tomato Recipe Starter from a can/jar of pizza sauce that you'd buy at the store. Another thing that I wasn't crazy about was the consistency. It's too thin, really wasn't suitable for spooning over the meatballs, just made the bread soggy. In spite of that, it's Friday night when I seldom cook much, and it was an easy dinner served with a big tossed salad. I used mozzarella and topped with my homemade pickled jalapeños. Doubtful I'd make again.
We really enjoyed this! I added Italian seasoning, garlic powder and black pepper to the sauce for a little more flavor, and I put banana peppers on my sub. Although it wasn't really anything special, it was a wonderfully easy and surprisingly tasty Monday night meal. I will probably make this again when I am looking for something that is super easy and a bit different from what I normally cook.
Made this recipe as written and grand daughter, age 8, loved it. She said that it tasted just like a bomber one of her friends mom makes. I let meatballs cool down a bit in the sauce and it seemed to thicken up a bit. You can change this up by adding more toppings but the sauce, cheese and meatballs complimented each other.
Secret to this is to cook, cook, cook this sauce! Very good but started out very thin. Reducing the sauce deepens the flavor and made it much richer than I thought the finished product was going to be. Good knife and fork sandwich and quick to boot!
I made this recipe as part of the allstar assignment. I thawed the meatballs and put all the ingredients in the slow cooker, added a can of stewed tomatoes and 1 cup of small onions. Cooked on low for 6 hours. In this time it did help to thicken up the watery progresso sauce. I did find the taste on the bland side, but a hand full of fresh basil and plenty of pepper kicked it up a bit. (This is not my personal choice of recipe would prefer to make my own sauce) but if you want something quick and simple, with a few little changes it makes an acceptable meal.
