Excellent recipe! I reduced the serving size to 9 servings. I was able to bake in in 9x13 dish (about 35 minutes). Used a different frosting recipe from this website. Cake was still very moist the next day.

Followed recipe, cake came out perfect. I did over cook a little next time I will do 30 minutes instead of 35. Cake was not as moist as I wanted, but I do believe that was from over baking. Icing was very rich, its was good to have enough to cover the cake plus. Next time I am going to change the chocolate to milk chocolate for icing, so it will loose some of the dark chocolate taste. Very good recipe thanks for sharing.

This is an awesome recipe that my sister found and has now become a family favourite! The first time she made it she forgot to add the water and it came out like scrumptious brownies....but with the water, its one of the most divine chocolate cakes we've had!

Cake just doesn't get any better than this, and I can't believe it's taken me so long to review this recipe. I've made it at least a dozen times now, and it is legendary among my friends, family and coworkers. It's dense without being heavy, rich without being cloying, and perfectly sweet and chocolatey. I don't change a thing, and wouldn't dream of using another icing. As other reviewers have mentioned, you really don't have to trim the tops of the layers. It bakes up just right, and is truly delicious.

This is the most wonderously delicious chocolate cake that I have ever tasted. I know it's a little thing, I mean, in the grand scheme of things, chocolate cakes aren't very significant, but I really think that you have enriched the world in this little way! Thank you so much for your generosity in sharing it with us! :)

Pretty good, but not quite as chocolatey tasting as I was hoping and a little too dense. I did use a different icing than the one with this recipe, so I can't speak for how the frosting tastes.

I don't get to eat this cake, since I'm giving it away. But, I nibbled a piece and the flavor was perfect - chocolate-y and moist. But, the thing I was most impressed about was the look of it. All three of my rounds were PERFECT - no hump in the middle, no breaking when taking out of the pan - and my oven is not known for greatness! Good job Sandy! I'm using Rick's Buttercream and Plastic Chocolate to decorate.

OK cake but not the best I have ever made. It was terrible trying to get it out of the pans (I used butter and flour on the pans) however I used 2 9x9" pans, so perhaps that made the difference. Besides that it was a nice cake but didn't have the depth of flavor that I like in a chocolate cake.

This is now my "go to" recipe for chocolate cake. By far, the best cake that I've ever had. I did not change anything about this recipe, it is perfect the way it is.

This recipe makes a very impressive-looking cake. My three layers baked up beautifully, very even. The frosting was easy to spread as well. That being said, it's a very "filling" cake. My guests all commented on it, many couldn't finish their serving. It's definitely a cake where a little slice goes a long way. I've made Too Much Chocolate Cake from this site many times and my family all agreed that we prefer it over this one. Not that this is not a good cake, we just prefer the other. I'm glad I tried it, though! Thanks, Sandy!

Sandy I have to say this is some cake! I was afraid it wouldn't turn out as well as it did-am at camp + have todeal with a HOT oven! The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because it is quite labor intensive in my opinion! The cake and frosting are both DELICIOUS! Didn't spare any calories on this one...no wonder it's a winner! Thanks for the post.

This cake is so incredible!!! I've made it many many times and always get so many compliments and requests for more! Made it one year for my boyfriend's birthday and instead of frosting on the inside, I put mint chocolate chip between the layers. AMAZING is all I can say! It's a great cake with the frosting too, but you might want to scale it down a bit - there's always SO much frosting left, and I really pile it on! Awesome cake overall,

I love this recipe and use it all the time for Birthday and Wedding cakes...The only change I always make is to substitute Strong Hot Coffee for the water. The coffee really helps intensify the chocolate flavor. Sometimes for a little extra flair I use ready made vanilla or chocolate cream cheese filling between the layers...peanut butter mousse filling is very good too... Great recipe it really deserves more than 5 stars..

Awesome awesome awesome recipe! This is my first review on allrecipes, and i am on this site evryday-- this cake is that good! I used coffee instead of the water, and did 1/2 cup sour cream and 1/2 cup heavy cream. Other than that left everything as is, and it was phenomenal. Planning on making this for my grandma's 70th birthday cake. Thanks for the wonderful recipe!
