I have always loved russian tea cakes...my mom has been making them for years! This Christmas is the first Christmas for my husband and I so I decided to try out these for my husband and while looking for a recipe I found a side note in my cookbook for peppermint tea cakes... they turned out AMAZING... all you do is add 3/4 cup crushed peppermint candies in with nuts and follow the rest of the recipe to a tee!

Ah! We just always called these nutballs. Now I have a nicer name for them. :) I'm going to compare my recipe to this one.

These are the cookies my grandmother and mother made. Unfortunately, they took the recipe with them when they passed away (too quickly). Anyway, thank you so much for sharing this recipe - now I can make them, too! Thanks again and Merry Christmas!

Very yummy cookie! Made just as the recipe suggests (although I only rolled mine in powdered sugar once). I definitely learned the importance of waiting until the cookies are totally cool before rolling in sugar...otherwise they get gummy/sticky.

A tad dry, but very good. It helps quite a bit if you soften one stick (Half cup) of butter. Softening both is too much, but one makes it moist and light. This is one of those things you either like or don't. I always called them Mexican Wedding cakes, by the way.

I make these but use pecans instead of walnuts. First toast the nuts; brings out the flavor and then finely chop them. Delicious, and I love that I can fit the whole batch on one cookie sheet.

This is a favorite holiday cookie. I've started substituting roasted unsalted cashews for the more traditional walnuts. The cashews have a buttery taste and complement the cookie well.

These deserve 10 stars. I got the recipe from the original Betty Crocker cookbook when I was married in the '60s. This is the only cookie I've made at Christmas time for many years. My family look forward to them every year. Friends always appreciate a gift of these scrumptious little bites. They're so easy to make; my only comment is to treat them very carefully when making them. If you do, you're guaranteed to have light, crumbly confections. You can't beat these - they're crowd pleasers.

Wonderful. Made these after another recipe failed. These turned out perfect! I used chopped almonds for a bit sweeter nut. Lovely texture and flavor.

I made these after a different cookie recipe didn't turn out good. These definitely made up for it! These are amazing! I did substitute 1/4 cup of the flour for cornstarch. Delicious!

Very good. My husband isn't a nut eater, but he kept going for the cookie jar. The cookie itself is pretty dry (in a good way), just make sure you have a drink handy if you plan to eat more than one.

Very good, but not quite great. With about a billion Christmas cookie recipes out there, there is tough competition though. On the plus side, with the powdered sugar and all, these are really easy to make look really good - less effort for a good impression!

These were the first ever Russian Tea Cakes I have ever made, and I picked a great recipe. These were fabulous! I made them because I had to have six dozen cookies for a church cookie sale and I had all the ingredients on hand. I made 12 dozen of these gems and was out the door with them in 2.5 hours. They were wildly popular. The only difference (if you could call it that) was that I didn't measure the confectioner's sugar that I was using for rolling them. I just dumped a bunch of it in a paper bag and tossed them to coat (remember I was on a time limit and the rolling seemed way too fussy). I tossed them six at a time in the paper bag while they were still warm (I worried that they might fall apart in there, but they held their shape beautifully and I wasn't even being all that gentle). Then I repeated the coating a second time when the cookies were completely cool (which didn't take long since I was doing it on my unheated back porch). The second coating is key if you want that wonderful fluffy effect. Fantastic recipe and one that'll go into the regular repertoire. Thanks for sharing it!
