Really good--even though I didn't follow exactly. I added a ham hock for the flavor, omitted the salt and the peppers. I'm sure as written it's also excellent--but what I loved the most was finally fixing beans in a crockpot successfully, and finding out that I don't have to always soak the beans!

Great recipe overall, I substituted 3/4 of the water with chicken stock and doubled the onion and garlic. I also added two bay leaves. I didn't add salt until the beans were pretty much cooked and even with that I used probably 1 teaspoon of salt as the chicken stock has salt in it as well. This recipe is a keeper and will no longer be buying refried beans in a can. This is a tasty alternative.

I love making this recipe and waking up to fresh beans in the morning. I usually take a scoop of beans to eat with eggs before I mash them. Any undisolved onion easily mashes. The jalapeno pepper is not strong with what the recipe calls for. Saving a fair amount of reserve is important so you can add it as needed.

Great recipe and so economical! Rosarita refried beans are $1.99 at my local market so it's just the most money saving way to make my favorite beans and they are healthier too. Muchas Gracias!

What a fantastic recipe. Great tasting and easy to make. After reading other reviews I decided to use 1 tsp. salt and 3 chicken bouillon cubes. Perfect.

I will never buy canned beans again! This recipe is so cheap, so easy, so flavorful and SO MUCH BETTER than the canned stuff! I like to add more cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, and a can of diced green chiles right before mashing. I also add a dash of cayenne for a little extra heat. Delicious!!!!!

These are definitely delicious!! However, I agree with the other reviews that it is a little salty. I would take it down to at least 3 tsp...other than that, it is really delicious. :-)

This recipe is much too salty, I had to cut the salt by 2/3 to make it palatable. Other than that, it was very good!

We've used this recipe so many times I had to come back and give it a 5 star rating. You'll never want to buy a can of refried beans again! We like to add a little chicken base and chili powder to the recipe. I also add at least 2 jalapenos or a serano pepper. It's not too hot, just adds a little more kick.

I used a mixture of dried beans, and it turned out great. Even better the 2nd day. So glad I wont have to buy canned beans again!

Great recipe, turned out really good but it might have a bit too much salt, better to start with less then add more if needed.

I can't believe that I have never made these from scratch before. For years I have made a bean dip with refried beans from a can. Well no more, these really were delicious!

I loved the consistency, but overall the flavor was a little dull to me. I added cumin and some garlic herb seasoning during the mashing. I would make these again if I needed A LOT of beans.

Yummy! I didn't have jalapeno but followed another idea and added taco seasoning and chicken bullion to the mix. In my slow cooker it took about 4 hours. Awesome recipe! Thanks for sharing :)
