The cake was dry and lacking in flavor. The frosting was DELICIOUS!!! I loved it and will make this frosting over and over. I will never make the cake again.

This is fabulous cake. The cooks who have problems with the icing separating: be sure to use BUTTER (not margerine) in the icing. I used margerine once and the icing separated. I actually use this recipe with GREEN food coloring for St. Pat's Day and it tastes just as delicious.

Maybe I just don't like red velvet cake, but like some others said, mine tasted like flour. I followed the recipie as written, and was disappointed too. (But maybe this is just the way red velvet cake tastes.) My frosting also turned out wierd. It didn't look at all like frosting and separated while I was mixing. I tried to thicken it up with some more sugar, which helped but made it very grainy. Not my favorite cake.

Followed the recipe exactly, and I even waited until the next day to try it. It was dry...definitely needed to be followed by something to drink. The icing wasn't great either, it tasted a lot like butter with sugar in it. I added 1/2c sour cream to improve the flavor and that helped some.

I did not make the cake -- my 10 year-old nephew did, and it is_absolutely_delicious. It was made yesterday but I just tasted it today. My nephew said it was too dry the first day, but after eating a piece of the day-old cake I can tell you it is dense and moist and delicious and crumbles in that perfect way that great chocolate cake does. Really, really good stuff. I can't comment on how easy it was to make, however, because even though my nephew is only 10 he's a genius at everything he does.

I make alot of cakes from scratch so this was an interesting one for me to try as I only had red velvet cake once and that was about 20 years ago so I don't remember what it is suppose to taste like. First, I couldn't find liquid red food coloring in my area. I had the paste kind and that was impossible to make a paste with the cocoa so I ended up just dropping the red coloring paste into the creamed mixture. No problem there. So why even bother with making the paste with cocoa? Since I'm not sure what this is suppose to taste like, it does not taste like a chocolate cake but there is a hint of chocolate. It had its own taste which I am having a hard time describing and slightly dry and that might be because of the vinegar/bak.soda being folded into the batter?? Its dryness was actually not a bad thing in this case. Regardless, i guess because it has its own taste that it is actually good and I plan to make this more often in the future. I made my own white frosting.Being that I don't know what it's suppose to taste like is why I'm giving it a 4 star. Thanks for sharing this recipe.

I made this cake for valentines day. It turned out very well. I was the first cake that I made completely from scratch. I was actually really suprised about the amount of coloring that is in this cake. Anyway, It turned out to be a hit with my boyfriend and with my parents :) Thanks for a good recipe!

This is the most excellent recipe!! I have been looking for it for almost 10 years including the icing. The icing recipe has been my nemisis! I recommend anyone to try it on any cake it's truly awesome!! Especially on a chocolate or devil's food cake.

The cake was wonderful. I had a hard time with the icing, but that might just be my inexperience with these kinds of things, it tasted great, but the texture wasn't like it should have been. I took it to a super bowl party and had none left to bring home!

I have never made a red velvet cake before, and this one was easy, but most of all, the most beatiful cake! I received rave reviews, for being moist and having the most wonderful fluffy frosting ever....it's a keeper!

Great cake. If anybody thinks the taste is bad they may have too much vineger or baking soda in it.

I am puzzled by the negative reviews for this recipe. I have made this cake at least six times, all with good results. I even made it in a 9X13 pan (I had to increase the baking time of course) and made it into a "spaceship" cake for my 5 year old son who loves this cake. I have found that this cake tastes better after refrigeration for some reason. And, I have found it very important to chill the milk and flour combination for the icing - if the butter melts then the icing consistancy becomes runny. The only "modification" I make to this recipe is that I use Dutch Process Cocoa instead of the regular cocoa, it has a stronger flavor. I think this cake is better than any I've had in a restaurant.

I will agree with the previous reviewer. I followed the recipe to the letter, and it was dense and flat. Later on I tried a different red velvet cake that had more eggs in it. It worked perfectly. so I would have to say that this recipe is not really good.

This cake was dry and went flat when I baked it. It was very expensive to make, and I wasted so much time and money. I also tried adding oil as others did, and obviously that was not a good idea!! Two thumbs down!!

I just recently had this at a resturant, and i was expecting something different. I probably did something wrong, but it just tasted like bread with icing. It is not bad, it is just not what i was expecting. 3 stars
