Meh. Maybe I have inappropriately high standards that I'm holding this recipe to, since I've had Indian food in India, but I wasn't particularly ecstatic about this recipe. I threw in some diced chicken breast while sauteeing onions, and added a chicken bouillion cube in the lentil water. I'd make this again occasionally.

Excellent recipe. My mod on this was to add some fresh chopped plum tomatoes and fried turkey kielbasa. YUM.

Good, but not a favorite. I did take a few liberties, like adding potatoes that I needed to use up and I didn't have fresh ginger, so I used dried. Maybe that's why it wasn't as fab as I expected.

This is a very tasty dish--nice and spicy but not overpowering. The only substitution I made was to use a 28oz can of diced tomatoes (undrained) instead of tomato paste. I ate it over Basmati rice. Will definitely make this regularly.

My husband and I liked this very much. I rated it a 4 star because I made a few changes. I used less hot ingredients, using only powdered curry, since we don't like real spicy foods. I used chicken broth instead of water, to add flavor. And used diced tomatos instead of tomato puree for added texture.

**hot *** this should have a few little hot chillis by it because it is really spicy but delicious! It is not very soupy because thelentils absorb so much liquid, I might try doubling the tomatos next time which would hopefully tame the flame.

This recipe got such good ratings from others, I'm wondering if I did something wrong. I thought it was ok, a little lacking in flavor, but ok. My husband and daughter thought it was way too spicy.

Very good, and looking forward to making again with all the good variations I'm reading in the other reviews. There are so many types of curry paste to use, so just changing that alone will give a different twist. I left out the teaspoon of salt thinking I can add it later if needed, but I didn't add any (the curry paste was quite salty).

Excellent. Super spicy - and we like spicy. I used chopped tomatoes in a can for puree. I have a feeling I'll be making it a lot from now on - healthy, cheap, tasty- what's not to like?

This was a great recipe. I, of course, made a few changes as recommended, using 1 14 oz. can Muir Glen fire roasted tomatoes (with green chilis for extra heat), and a can of organic coconut milk to the end. It was a huge hit!

I used this recipe as a guide, and made a few alterations due to what I had on hand. I was making a half recipe, so I used a small onion; I didn't have turmeric; and I used jarred minced ginger. I also still used the full can of tomatoes (fire-roasted) despite halving the rest of the ingredients. Cooking the lentils in chicken broth adds a little richness, but it's easily done without. Do make sure to rinse the lentils very well. It's a really good basic red lentil dal recipe - I serve it over brown basmati rice and with a tablespoon of yogurt on top to help cut the heat a little. It makes a TON - maybe I don't eat that much, but the half-recipe I made will feed me for at least six meals, not four. It's also quite good with a hardboiled egg sliced up on top.

I make this all the time. However, I use madras curry paste instead of the curry powder and paste and I use a big can of diced tomatoes instead of the pureed ones. I also like to toss in some frozen peas. I serve with roti instead of rice. So, so yummy!

Remarkably tasty, easy, yet too firey the first go! I remember hesitating for a moment with the curry paste (I think I actually did a double-take on the measurement) but I left the recipe unaltered. Thumbs up for my fire breathing guests, but for me...I would rather have been forewarned.

Absolutely excellent! A big hit even with my parents, who aren't too adventurous, so I didn't use the curry paste, just more curry powder. Thanks for this new staple in my menus!

An above average lentil curry recipe. Works well as one of a selection of dishes, but not by itself. Really good with plain yogurt on top.
