Original Recipe Yield 3 - 4 dozen
 

Ingredients

  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 drops red food coloring

Directions

  1. Mix ingredients in the order given. Divide dough and add enough red food coloring for desired shades of pink or red.
  2. Refrigerate dough for 40 to 60 minutes.
  3. Roll and cut out with heart cutters. Sprinkle with sugar. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 11 minutes. Do not overbake.
