Hard Maple Candy

Submitted by: Dorothea Bohrer
During the war, the women at my grandmother's church would donate sugar rations throughout the year so they'd have enough to make candy as a fund-raiser each Christmas. I'm lucky enough to have inherited this tried-and-true recipe. --Dorothea Bohrer, Silver Spring, Maryland

The recipe for this wonderfully buttery candy was handed down from my grandma. My brothers, sisters and I love it now as much as we did when we were little...and so do our families. It's become a cherished tradition.

It's fun to tuck a few of these twists onto a platter of Christmas cookies. The holidays in out home wouldn't be the same without peppermint candies.

This hard candy was always the first thing to sell out at fundraisers we held back when I was in high school. I still make the melt-in-your-mouth morsels every Christmas.

I've been whipping up this Christmasy treat-- with its jolly red and green candied cherries and scrumptious chopped nuts-- since 1955. It's so light it melts in your mouth.

An easy recipe for hard candy. The hardest part is waiting for the sugar to reach the proper temperature. Be patient and use a candy thermometer for perfect candy. This recipe can easily be adjusted by using different flavored extracts and food colorings.
