Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. Stir the hash browns, sour cream, Cheddar cheese, celery soup, onion flakes, 1/2 cup melted butter, and salt together in a 9x12-inch baking dish.
  3. Stir the bread crumbs and 1/2 cup melted butter in a small bowl; top the hash brown mixture with the bread crumb mixture. Do not mix topping until right before you put the dish in the oven, otherwise it will become soggy.
  4. Bake in preheated oven until the topping is golden brown, about 45 minutes.

wanted to love it...followed the recipe as is- tasted like a salt lick with a side of potatoes.

I used unsalted butter and plain bread crumbs as well as skip the additional salt, and came upon a beautiful finished product...even though my picture is a bit lacking. We served this for brunch with Crockpot Scrambled Eggs, assorted breakfast meats and fruit salad, etc... Thanks Jessica for sharing your Mom's recipe, it was a nice addition to our table.
