I always make 2 apple pies, some family like tart and this is it. In answer to others the trick to a good pie is to mix golden or yellow apples with red more tart apples together. The sweetness of one offsets the tartness of the other and less sugar. My family likes cheddar cheese slice melted on top in mirowave just before serving.

I don't like apple pie, but my husband does. He now requests me to use the same recipe as last time. Always WONDERFUL so he says.

This was the first time I had ever made a pie, and this one turned out just okay. I probally wont make it again it was not sweet enought for my family even though I added more sugar and no lemon juice. Also you must use at least 8 tablespoons of water, four just doesnt cut it.

OMG! Such a good apple pie recipe! The only one I will ever use. In fact this is what I am taking for my dessert for Thanksgiving. I used 4 different types of apples, 2 each. And the sweetness of some balanced out the tartness of the other......

If you want a sweeter pie, use red apples. Also, you can switch to Splenda which is sweeter than sugar to make it less tart. But if you switch to Splenda, you need to follow the conversion chart to see how much Splenda to use.

This is the best apple pie I have ever made. followed the recipe exactly. Did not use the crust part though I was pressed for time. I used store crust. We went up to ellajay (north GA Mtns.) to the apple farms and brought back a heepen helpen of apples. I used Arkansas Black apples which are a perfect baking apple. Turned out wonderful. Thanks

Yay! This recipe turned out perfectly for me (and I'm not the most experienced piemaker in the world). I used 1/2 Granny Smith and 1/2 Honey Crisp apples and really liked the way it turned out. Great consistency, not overly sweet, perfect with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. Thanks for the recipe!

I've made this recipe twice. The differences that I think made the recipe work well for me were to chill the dough as a whole, remove it, cut the dough in half, roll each ball to about half an inch thick and chill it again. I also used a convection oven once as opposed to a conventional oven which of course gave me a more evenly cooked crust. Everybody knows crusts can be tricky but you cannot go wrong with this filling!

Lowered sugar to 1/2 cup white sugar and 1/4 cup packed dark brown sugar. (I'm not a member of the "sweet apple pie" club!) When you slice the apples this thin, it creates a lot of juice and the pie may may cook down in the center. Overall, very solid apple pie.

This pie is perfect, great crust and filling. And for those that say it is too tart- If you are using tart apples omit the lemon juice, and if you are using sweet apples follow the recipe. Simple as that.

this recipe is great. Just too sweet, have to cut down the sugar, make it to 1/2 cup, the rest ok. Great recipe, my family all love it!

Great recipe! I used 4 Granny Smith and 4 Gala apples as I think a pie with all Granny Smith is too tart. Yum!

I'm not a fan of apple pie by any means but we went apple picking on Saturday so I had to do something. Plus DS loves apple pie. According to him as well as a few others that had this, it was delicious but a little too heavy on the cinnamon. That may be my fault since halfway through making, I realized I was out of nutmeg and tried substituting pumpkin pie spice instead. I also used a a ready made Pillsbury crust. Will be making another pie this week since we have a ton of apples and this time will make sure I have nutmeg and may also cut back on the cinnamon just a little bit. Overall got rave reviews and the bonus was how nice the house smelled while it was baking!

I followed other suggestions and ised a mixed variety of tart and sweet apples. I also used 3/4 cup of white sugar and 3/4 cup of brown sugar, which provided that right amount of sweet for my family. This is the best apple pie I have ever made and will be my go to receipe from now on.
