Peanut Butter Squares
SUBMITTED BY:
Marilyn Hanson
"The combination of peanut butter and oatmeal makes these bars popular. My children love them with a cold glass of milk, and I've taken them to many church suppers, too."

DIRECTIONS
In a large mixing bowl, cream shortening, sugars and peanut butter. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add water and vanilla; mix well. Bake at 350 degrees F for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. In a small mixing bowl, beat the icing ingredients until smooth. Pour over warm bars. Cool on a wire rack.

...reminiscent of peanut butter brownies from the bakery in my home town...I used 1 1/2 cup flour and 1/2 cup whole wheat flour and didn't notice a difference. Yum!

I made these to bring with me to a family gathering which included all ages with a variety of taste preferences. This is a simple, yet not at all boring, dessert and easily appealed to everyone there - I, myself, ate 4!

These are quite good - more like a brownie than a typical sweet square. Without frosting they remind me of a health bar with the peanut butter and oatmeal and not being overly sweet. If I feel like a sweeter treat I'll frost some of them. Thanks for the recipe!
