Old-Time Popcorn Balls
SUBMITTED BY:
LaReine Stevens
"Our whole family loves popcorn. These old-time popcorn balls are great anytime, but they're especially fun to pass out to trick-or-treaters or to use at Christmastime as stocking stuffers! They always look appealing when covered in a clear warp and tied with a festive ribbon."

DIRECTIONS
Place popcorn in a large bowl and set aside. In a heavy saucepan, combine molasses, sugar, water, vinegar and butter. Cook, without stirring, over medium heat until the mixture reaches 235 degrees F on a candy thermometer (soft-ball stage). Add baking soda and stir well. Remove from heat and immediately pour over popcorn, stirring gently with a wooden spoon until well coated. When cool enough to handle, quickly shape into 3-in. balls, dipping hands in cool water to prevent the syrup from sticking.

These are yummy!! They taste just like caramel corn. It's the only recipe I could track down for popcorn balls that didn't use corn syrup. I was a bit hesitant since molasses has a strong and distinctive taste but by the time the syrup was done and ready to use the taste was significantly mellowed. I plan to make many more batches of these over the holiday season. Thanks for sharing this great recipe!

This is a great recipes I didn't change a thing except to triple the batch. These reminded me of my grandfather's popcorn balls growing up in up-state Vermont. Thanks for submitting this GREAT recipe

These were fantastic. Like someone else said, I was wary of using molasses because of the strong flavor, but it turned out wonderfully. This was the first time my boyfriend tried popcorn balls and I was afraid I'd get a bad recipe, but this was fantastic. :D

Nostalgically delicious! Just like we used to get when we trick or treated. I made these last night for my 4 grandkids and they gobbled them up lickety split. I did use microwave popcorn (buttered 2 bags) My teen who does NOT like molasses loved them too. Easy, inexpensive and delightful. Terrific recipe find!

I thought these were great! Had a craving for popcorn balls, looked on the site and voila, here's a great recipe! I halved it and it was fine. The only thing I wish I thought of ahead of time, which is now OBVIOUS, was to remove the unpopped kernals of corn before pouring the mixture over the popcorn. I wore disposable gloves and sprayed them with butter flavoured cooking spray to form the balls. Agree with other reviews that the molasses is not overpowering. Fantastic!

This recipe was absolutely terrific! It was my first time making popcorn balls, and they turned out great. I think next time I try this recipe I may not use as much popcorn as they suggest, and the sauce may cover it more completely. I was limited in what I had the household, and used microwaved popcorn (2bags) rather then kernels. I highly suggest this recipe!

Good Recipe, tasted just like crackerjacks. Only I had a hard time getting the balls to stay as balls. They kept fallng apart. So, I threw in a carmal squares (meltedw/ mixture) and some mixed nuts and they stuck very well. The darker ones in the photo are the ones with caramel.

This recipe was easy and fun. My 13 year-old nephew helped to make them and he had a great time helping make them and then a great time eating them. I was a little nervous about the molasses, but it was a huge hit. I think next time I will try putting peanuts in it and see how that works.
