I wouldn't call this a spicy dish unless you use spicy BBQ sauce. My kids loved it. We took it camping and found the flavor even better when reheated the second day. If you use a dutch oven, it's a one dish meal! I read somewhere to add a pinch of baking soda to beans to cut down on their side effects so I did this but that's the only change I made.

this is such a good recipe!! They didn't have great northern beans at pricemart, so instead, i got 2 cans of kidney beans and 2 cans of pork and beans, i'm sure it would have been even better if i had the great northern beans instead! I made bannock with it too, sooo yummy!

I omitted the white sugar, as other reviewers suggested, and it was still a bit sweet for my taste. Overall, though, a great dish.

Yes! A real husband pleaser! I used a large can of Bush's Baked Beans in place of the pork & beans and kidney beans; and I adjusted the sugar down a bit accordingly. This recipe is definitely a "have for lunch the next day" recipe!

I made this recipe last night (2/3/08), and like most of the other reviewers, my husband really liked it! Next time I make it I'll eliminate the white sugar & ketchup, though, because it was way too sweet for us. I'll use just brown sugar and BBQ sauce in place of ketchup. I used ground turkey as well. Thanks!

Delish! I used homemade ketchup and BBQ sauce, cooked the white and kidney beans from scratch, used ground turkey instead of beef and cut down the sugar to a total of 1/2 C (instead of 2/3 C). We loved it and I will probably lower the sugar a bit more next time, it was very sweet.

This recipe was very good. I used a hot in spicy barbeque sauce for an extra kick. It went over very well with my husband and 4 kids. Will definetly make again.

browned meat/bacon/onion in pan, added all ingredients to slow cooker. After tasting it I decided to add another 1/4 cup more of ketchup and bbq sauce. For you canadians, I used President Choice Beer & Chipotole bbq sauce, yummy. The whole family liked it. Next time I will also try using turkey bacon and ground turkey to really cut down on the fat content. Thanks, Michele, Cambridge, Ontario

These are one of the best Old Settler's Beans recipe that I have found. My husband absolutely loves these. We are having family over for Halloween this evening and these will be the main dish. Great recipe.

I made this recipe with just a couple of modifications. I used a full pound of ground beef, and carefully trimmed some bacon ends and pieces before frying them to a crisp. Because of the extra meat, I added another can of beans (try butter beans, they add a very nice shape & texture), and some extra BBQ sauce and ketchup. I thought the chili powder was a nice touch. Thanks for the great recipe.

Delicious! I substituted Bush's baked beans for the kidney beans, and I couldn't have been happier with how they turned out. I'm even making enough for 70 people next weekend for my fiance's grandparents 50th wedding anniversary!

My regular recipe calls for molasses instead of white sugar and since I was out of molasses I ran to Allrecipes and found this. This recipe is delicious. Since I'm used to the sweetness of molasses I added a squirt of honey in addition to the recipe ingredients.

These are Amazing Beans! And I know a good baked bean recipe when I taste one. I get rave reviews everywere I take these. Instead of a can of pork and beans I use a 28 oz can of bushs baked beans and I replace the kidney beans with pinto, I also use turkey bacon and extra lean ground turkey. AMAZING I can eat the whole dish by myself!
