I loved this recipe. I also used panko bread crumbs and they turned out perfect.

I will NEVER eat onion rings out again! These are SO much better than my fave at a national drive in chain. I used vidalia onions. I think I may add a smidge of vanilla next time to the batter to give it a sweeter taste.

It's a messy endeavor but well worth it! I loved how quickly they fried up -- I'd recommend battering & breading them ALL before you start frying. My guests oohed & aahed and thought they were better than any restaurant they'd had, saying: 1. light & crispy, 2. held up well even after they cooled, 3. the onion never slipped out of the breading. I will definitely make these again. Rave reviews!

Cut ours to 1/2" wide. The crunch and texture were great! I do however agree with some other reviewers, some additional spice/flavor in the batter would be good. We cooked ours outside. Used a rack from the oven held up by beer cans on the deck to do the flouring and battering. When done, hose off deck, worked great, no mess.

These are very good. I used buttermilk (it took a little more than a cup because of the thickness), plus added garlic powder and paprika to the flour. I was very pleased with how the batter stuck to the onion, even when it went into the oil (I used others' suggestions of cutting them thicker. 1/2 inch worked great for me). I do have a hard time with waste, so instead of letting the rings sit while batter drips off them, I held them up with a fork and just scraped excess off back into the bowl. The kids raved about them. We even have some left for lunch tomorrow. I'll probably warm them in the oven to make them crispy again.

I followed some advice in another review and used panko crumbs that I had put through a small food processor. I served them with a copy cat recipe for outback dipping sauce...and they were a HUGE hit with my family!

hmmm...not sure what to say. Very very messy, and I didn't feel like it was worth all the work. They weren't that amazing. Sorry :(.

I absolutely love onion rings, I live on an island and I haven't had Sonic's onion rings for 3 years. OMG these were so good and they do taste a lot like Sonic's onion rings. I bought plain bread crumbs to make these with I made them a couple of times. With the last batch I accidently used parmesan flavored crumbs they were so delicious. Thanks for sharing.

Pretty darned good. Next time I'll make the onion slices larger so they better balance the breading.

This is a good recipe and made this 3 times already. I used 3 large onions without adding more on the ingredients. I used Italian Bread Crumbs instead of plain. It was really good better than the one at fast food.

These were really good! I used the NW's amazing Walla-Walla Sweets and a combo of Panko and bread crumbs (needed more than the recipe called for and had to combine the two since I didn't have enough of each). I will spice them up for my tastes (more salt, pepper...maybe some seasoning salt...will have to play with it)next time, but otherwise this is a keeper.

We tried two different onion ring recipes from this site since we have a plethora of onions from our garden. This one was BY FAR the best!! Will definitely use this -and only this- recipe again and again! Thanks for sharing!

These were really good. I see why they tell you to put crumbs in plate. I tried to expedite things and do the shake-in-a-bag, and ended up with a lot of stuck-together crumbs at the end, but the rings that did get crumbs were terrific. Also, I baked them at 350 and flipped after 10 minutes and then left in another 15 minutes or so. My husband LOVED them. I will try the Panko next time. :)

This is a great recipe!! My husband and daughter loved them. You can also cut the onion thin and put them on top of hamburgers or any of your favorite sandwiches. So good and crispy.
