I made this recipe just before we showed our house. Not only did the people buy the house, but they requested the recipe.--Nancy Fridirici

A friend gave me this recipe many years ago, and it's since become a family favorite. I love the aroma of these cookies as they're baking.

Among Mother's old newspaper clippings and recipes scribbled on the back of envelopes, I came across this treasured recipe. It always gives me a warm feeling when I go through her recipe box, and I have fond memories of her baking these cookies.

My mother got this recipe in about 1910 when she was a housekeeper and cook for the local physician. The doctor's wife was an excellent cook and taught my mother of lot of her cooking techniques. The cookies soon became a favorite in our home and, when I got married and had a family of my own, they were a favorite throughout the years. My five children also enjoy baking these cookies for their own families--it's a real family tradition.

My five children love maple and brown sugar oatmeal, so I decided to add those ingredients to my oatmeal cookies. The first time I made them, they vanished in just a few days! --Karen Nienaber, Erskine, Minnesota

These down-home-flavored cookies are a family favorite. Toasting the oats gives them an extra nutty flavor. The cookies freeze well and remain crisp...but I've found that whenever I make them of our children and grandchildren, I never have enough left to freeze!

I'm the fourth generation of cooks in my family to bake these cookies. When my grandmother sent me a batch for my birthday one year, I asked her for the recipe - not knowing I already had it in a booklet of handwritten recipes she'd given me. Embarrassed, I looked, and sure enough there it was. That's when I learned it was originally my great-grandmother's recipe...it's one that I will definitely make sure gets passed on!
