It is good soup. I followed the recipe exactly but made the changes reccommended by others comments. They cooked bacon the added the bacon grease to the veges and water to cook. Next time it might be good to not add the clams. The kids didn't like them.

Great chowder. I also included bacon as recommended by other commenters. Comes out a little bland but that's what salt, pepper and hot sauce are for. Loved it!

Absolutely the best homemade chowder, and practically beats any I've tried anywhere else! I followed the recipe to a T, with only 3 minor changes. First, I sauteed bacon with the onions, then added the rest of the veggies and liquid and simmered all together. Secondly, I didn't have half and half, but I had whole milk on hand, and that worked just as well. Everything came together perfectly!! Third, I added corn, because I like corn in my chowder and so does my family. I doubled the recipe and it makes a big pot that feeds a family of 6 adults, plus leftovers. Make sure to cook the roux a bit before adding the cream to cook away the flour taste. And the longer you cook the cream with the roux, the thicker your base will be. My chowder was perfect!!! And who would've thought that red wine vinegar (the secret ingredient) would have brought all the flavors together so wonderfully! This has to be the most easiest and super tasting chowder ever.

The recipe as is, is quite bland, but a good base to season as you would like. There are several good suggestions as to how to perk this recipe up (tsp onion and/or garlic powder, etc.). Clam juice itself is not overly tasteful. Instead of water or additional clam juice, I'd cover the cooking vegetables with a quart of chicken broth. Also, a good roux takes takes a few minutes and patience (the flour & butter step). Alternatively, I would definitely go with the bacon suggestion: Dice up 4 strips of bacon and fry until golden brown, add 1/2 cup flour. and mix together, browning slightly - then add gradually add the cream, etc. Good luck!

Omg!!! Followed this recipe exactly except seasoned flour with a little Old Bays (@ 1/2 tsp) and a pinch of garlic powder and used white pepper instead of black pepper and I added it to the veggies as they cooked. Very simple, easy, quick recipe...start to finish under an hour. You will not be disappointed. Yummy yummy yummy!!!

Very good and easy to make clam chowder! For me it needed just 2 adjustments. The first being more clams. I used the recipe calc. to cut down to four servings , which called for 1 1/2 cans of clams. I put in 2 cans and was still a bit short. Next time I will use 3 cans to make 4 servings. The other adjustment was to add Old Bay seasoning with the salt and pepper to add a bit more seafood taste. I then baked an olive cheese spread on the bread and it was a meal fit for a King!

This recipe was excellent! To make it a little richer, I sauteed a 1/2 pound of diced bacon, added it to the simmering vegetables and clam stock/water, then deglazed the bacon pan with a little white wine and added it as well. I then added a little dried thyme, a dash of Worcestershire sauce and a dash of red wine vinegar and let the soup simmer on very low heat for another 1/2 hour. It really made this rich and hearty - my husband loved it. :)

Made changes: added bacon crumbles at end, sautéed veggies in the bacon fat, and subbed clam juice for water and white pepper for black, all per other reviews.
