Grandmother's Mustard Pickles

Submitted by: Wendy L
Cauliflower, cucumbers, onions and peppers are pickled in a creamy mustard sauce. My grandmother used to make these many years ago and all of us looked forward to dinner at her home where she would serve them. She is now 98 years old and it is up to her grand daughters to make them for her.

Spicy pickles with a hint of horseradish will set your pickles head and shoulders above the rest. You will get raves on these pickles! I always get asked to make more or bring more to work. These are worth a try! This makes a really crisp, great tasting pickle!

Dill pickles are fermented in brine with fresh dill, garlic and peppercorns. This recipe was handed down to me by my mother Sofia, whose pickles were always in great demand.

This recipe for Kosher style dills was given to me 25 years ago by a farmers wife who grew cucumbers and it has never let me down. The two things I have found critical to crisp dill pickles are soaking the cukes in ice water for at least 2 hours and ensuring the brine is at a full boil when poured over the dills.

Now you can have all the goodness of crunchy sweet-sour pickles without going to the trouble of canning them. A batch of these puckery slices can keep in the freezer for up to 6 weeks--but they never last that long at my house! 151 Jean Vance Charlotte, North Carolina
