Most of my cooking and baking is from scratch, and I think it's worth the time and effort. Everyone enjoys homemade goodies like this delicious bread.

The ladies from our church have frequent bake sales, and this bread is always a hot item. It only takes one taste to understand why that's so!

Milk gives this bread a soft tender crust that appeals to all. All-purpose, whole wheat and rye flours blend beautifully in this family-favorite recipe.

I was a novice at break making when a neighbor gave me this recipe 15 years ago. Now bread making is one of my favorite things to do. This recipe won a blue ribbon at the Clackamas County Fair in 1993.

'The first time I made this old-fashioned oat bread, my husband, two daughters and I ate the entire loaf! It's the best bread we've ever tasted,' writes Michele Odstrcilek of Lemont, Illinois. Sweetened with a hint of maple syrup, the golden brown yeast bread will rise to any mealtime occasion.

This simple recipe does not require kneading and calls for just one rising time. Slices are absolutely delicious toasted and topped with butter.

I bake twice a week because my family loves it. But I wanted a simple, foolproof recipe. After experimenting with several, I came up with this light-colored wheat bread, and my husband and children always want more. -Holly Shirk, Grantville, Pennsylvania

'WE BAKED at least two batches of bread each week for our family of six. We also spent hours (or so it seemed) churning the butter to spread on it, which we especially loved to do while it was still warm. Fried chicken never tasted quite as good without homemade bread-and-butter sandwiches.'

'It's worth the time making this bread just to fill the house with the heavenly aroma as it bakes,' remarks Angel Olvey of Kokoma, Indiana. 'But eating a thick slice is even better.'
