My son's favorite cookie in the world. He has me bake a massive batch of these cookies for him once a year so he can wrap them in foil and freeze them so he can eat them year round! In place of chocolate syrup you can fold in chocolate chips, nuts or other goodies to suit your taste.

Mom worked hard to keep us fed during the Depression, and there was never a day we went hungry. These cookies could always be found in the cookie jar.

These cookies are great rolled out or you can put them through the bar cookie disc of a cookie press to make thin cookies. (Using a cookie press is much faster than rolling them out.)

The kitchen smells so good when Mom is baking these yummy cookies, which we like to make with sorghum. They're chewy and tender, with a sugary coating. It's hard to eat just one! -Brenda Beachy Belvidere, Tennessee

This recipe does taste like Mrs. Field's. When I make them it does not take long for my husband and three boys to make them disappear.

With four sons in service during World War II, my mother sent these favorite cookies as a taste from home to 'her boys' in different parts of the world. These days, my 11 grandchildren are enjoying them as we did, along with my stories of long ago. -- Pearl Cochenour, Williamsport, Ohio
