  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. Grease a 9-inch deep-dish pie plate.
  3. Spoon 1 tablespoon of the buttermilk into a small bowl; place remainder of 1 cup buttermilk into a separate bowl.
  4. Stir golden raisins into the larger amount of buttermilk and allow raisins to soak while you complete the remaining steps.
  5. Spoon 1 tablespoon of the melted butter into the small bowl with the tablespoon of buttermilk; stir to combine and set aside. Set remaining melted butter aside.
  6. Whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a bowl.
  7. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients, pour in reserved butter, and stir until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  8. Mix the egg into the flour mixture until thoroughly combined.
  9. Mix the soaked raisins with buttermilk into dough and shape dough into a ball.
  10. Place the ball of dough into prepared pie dish and lightly pat dough down so top is slightly domed.
  11. Use a sharp knife to cut two crisscrossing lines through the center of the loaf about 1/4 inch deep.
  12. Thoroughly brush buttermilk and butter mixture over the loaf, getting the mixture into the crevices.
  13. Bake in the preheated oven until loaf is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, 55 minutes to 1 hour.

The raisins make it very sweet. It's like a giant biscuit. Perfect with corned beef and cabbage.

Sorry, didn't care for it. Having two Irish parents, I grew up on soda bread, but I did not care for this version.

Wonderful St. Patty's Day treat! I made no changes to this recipe and it came out great. Although, I baked my soda bread for 55 minutes in the oven and the bottom was a little burnt. I would recommend cooking it for, maybe, 45-50 minutes.

I left out the golden raisins but otherwise made no modifications. Excellent, I really enjoyed this. Thanks for sharing!

This is delicious! At first I thought I did something wrong because it was my first time making it and the dough was a little crumbly. It tastes so sweet and perfect. I will definitely be using this recipe again.

This is exactly how my Grannie made soda bread for me!! I don't like raisins, so she always made a "plain" cake for…love it!! Tastes just like it did in Barroe:)
