I'm a country boy from Kentucky and grew up with homemade molasses cookies. All I can say about this receipt is OMG!! I used butter for the shortening and pure Kentucky sorghum molasses (made at Oberholtzer's Sorghum Mill in Liberty, KY). The cookies have a wonderful buttery, rich, spiced flavor, slight crunch on the outside and moist, chewyness on the inside. When I bit into the first one, I quite frankly had a flashback to my childhood. This recipe is going to be a part of my annual Christmas collection from now on!! Thank you Karin for this fantastic recipe!!

Nice shape, chewy texture, great balance of spice. I followed these recommendations from other reviewers: 1) Instead of 2c. granulated sugar as written in the recipe, I used 1c. granulated sugar and 1c. brown sugar; 2) I used butter-flavored shortening; 3) I baked the cookies right away without refrigerating the dough; 4) I only used 1/2t. salt; 5) I used a baking stone, baked the cookies for 10 minutes, took them out of the oven, let them sit for one minute on the baking stone, then removed the cookies and placed them on a cooling rack. They turned out perfectly. Additionally, I used a number 50 scoop, which resulted in the recipe making 70 cookies.

Try this recipe using butter-flavored shortening and substitute dark brown sugar for 1/2 of the total sugar amount. Really enhances the rich flavor. I also underbake them a bit for a nice chewy center and crispy outside crunch. My family's hands-down favorite !

This is a simple to make and delicious cookie. I followed the recipe completely with the exception of adding a bit of fresh ginger. I used baking stone which did not need to be greased and extended the baking time to 10 minutes. They turned out perfectly....pretty to the eye and delecious to eat.

I had to cook them 12 min to get rid of the goo inside the cookie. Also, I didn't understand all that stuff about melting butter on the stove, nobody does that, melt it in the microwave and add it to the mix. This is a one-bowl recipe. They were a little too salty for me, but everyone else liked them. I copied the other poster and did 1 cup white and 1 cup brown sugar and I added a t of nutmeg. The rolling of the cookies in the granulated sugar would be fun for a minor, too bad there were none around. Not the best, but still a fun recipe.

This was quick & easy! I didn't change a thing. I loved the fact that I could make these in 1 pan & then stick the whole thing in the frig. I was looking for a recipe for a cookie exchange...my hubby said these were a winner!

These were wonderful! It was an easy recipe to follow. Next time I make them I think I will cut down on the baking soda as after they baked they did have a little bit stronger baking soda flavor to them than I like.

Wow. Cookies are nice and soft! I used 1/2 white and 1/2 brown sugar. I like to roll them in superfine sugar (not powdered) and sprinkle a little more over the tops before baking. Nice, crackled, sparkly appearance! For me, it was 350 for 12 minutes, perfection. Only 4 stars, though, because they weren't quite spicy enough. Next time I'll add some fresh grated ginger for an extra kick!

These are the best cookies I have ever had. The kids went crazy for them!! My house smelled sooooo good. They are definitely better chewy than crunchy. I have already made these 3 times within the past week.

Yum! A nice soft, chewy cookie that warms your insides with just the right amount of spice. I only modified the recipe by using 3/4 tsp. of ginger and 1/4 tsp. of cayenne. Really adds that extra bit of warmth. Perfect for cold winters!

AMAZING. So incredibly good and very very easy to whip up. I don't even sift the flour/spices. I just throw it in the bowl after I've mixed the wet ingredients. An easy, one-bowl recipe. I've also been in a hurry and baked it immediately after mixing and it turned out just fine, along with getting the beautiful crackles on top. I dip the tops of the dough balls in sugar b4 baking and sprinkle a little on top after it's done. I also use 50/50 white and light brown sugar which gives it a richer taste. Spice amounts are also right on. For walnut size dough balls, 10 min. is the perfect baking time. My master molasses recipe from now on. TIP - I'm quite firm about using real butter for all my baking recipes, but Molasses cookies is the one exception. Using shortening will give this cookie it's chewiness so I'd recommend NOT to substitute with butter.

I don't like molasses, but these cookies are awesome! I cooked mine for 10 minutes, and then froze them, as they were for Christmas & I made them 2 weeks ahead. They froze great! You couldn't even tell.

These are fabulous cookies. So spicy and chewy they really are great. Don't let the unattractive picture with the green sprinkles scare you, they really are very pretty cookies with just the sprinkled sugar on them.

My son and I made these as a holiday gift for his teachers at school. They were terrific! And the advice to use a piece of bread to soften the cookies if they dried out worked perfectly.
