Military S.O.S. Feasty Style

Recipe by

"Stand up straight! Suck in that gut! Straighten that chin! AAAH! The good ol' days! Come to think of it, that S.O.S. you use to eat back in the service wasn't all that bad, right? Let The Feasty Boys show you their variation of the very S.O.S. the U.S. Coast Guard is still talkin' about!!"

Directions

  1. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and maple sausage, and cook until no longer pink. Gradually mix in flour, while stirring continuously, until the mixture is thick and pasty. You may not need all of the flour. Slowly whisk in the milk using a fork so that lumps do not form. Stir in bouillon. Continue cooking and stirring constantly until the mixture reaches your desired consistency. The longer it cooks, the thicker it will get.
  2. Toast slices of white bread, and top with the meat gravy. Garnish with a little fresh parsley, and serve.

My grandfather used to make this recipe when we were all kids. It is soooo fantastic! Thanks for bringing back the memories!

What really sets this one apart is the maple flavored sausage. Don't recall the line cooks in the service having that, lol, but I could be wrong. Add some cracked black pepper and salt to your taste. The extra lean beef means that there is less shrinkage yet I used 1 1/4 or so of 80/20 and did not drain it. Yum

My family has been eating this for years! We hadn't used beef or the boulion before though. It makes a great dish even better. My grandaddy was in Korea in communications on the line and had this on leaves. He liked it so much that we started having it at home once a week. He use to say it was the only good thing about the war! Thanks for making this favorite even better!

My hubby still raves about the SOS he had while in the military so I had to try this one just for him. I did not have maple flavored sausage so I used regular breakfast sausage and it worked out great. (My husband did not think that the military used a flavored sausage either) Simple and a real stick to your ribs kind of meal. Thanks for sharing.
