Marjoram and thyme come through nicely in this old-fashioned soup that tastes just like Grandma used to make. 'You can modify the recipe to include vegetables your family enjoys,' notes Food Editor Colleen Martin. 'My kids love carrots, so I always toss in extra.'

'This isn't Grandma's chicken soup, but it is comforting,' assures Bill Hilbrich from St. Cloud, Minnesota. 'The lemon juice gives this easy soup enough zip to make it interesting.'

Filling soups like this make it easy to get through cold New England winters. The meatballs are extra-easy because they cook in the soup...there's no need for browning beforehand.

With meat, potatoes and other vegetables, this rich-tasting soup is really a meal in one. Process cheese sauce makes it taste like a cheeseburger. I serve this soup with a nice crusty loaf of French bread. - Ione Sander, Carlton, Minnesota

Diners will ladle out praises all around the table when you serve this flavorful soup. 'My husband and three sons can't get enough of it,' says Maxine Pierson of San Ramon, California. 'I created this recipe for a dinner I hosted for a group of friends. The main course was Italian, and I needed a good soup, so I converted a favorite tortilla soup recipe by substituting pasta and adding different seasonings.'

I like making homemade noodles and I often add carrots, potatoes and corn to this soup. To me, homemade soup means homemade bread, too! Rich soup and fresh bread...what great country food at any time of year.

This soup is a variation of the wonderful Greek avgolemono soup. Using ready-made meatballs makes it a quick and easy supper dish, but it doesn't shortcut the hearty soup's delicious flavor.

MY daughter-in-law, a gourmet cook, served this soup as the first course for Thanksgiving dinner. She'd gotten the recipe from her mom and graciously shared it with me. Now I'm happy to pass it along to Reminisce readers. -Anne Kulick, Phillipsburg, New Jersey
