I incorporated many of the reviewer's suggestions as well as a few of my own and have to say I finally made a better lasagna than my mother-in-law! This is what I ended up with: 1. I sauteed the onion with 2 cloves garlic (in addition to adding the garlic powder) and also threw in 1/2 a green pepper since it had seen better days 2. I had about a lb. of Italian ground sausage in the freezer that I combined with the ground beef 3. I used 2 cans of fire-roasted diced tomatoes and reduced the water to about a cup. I also threw in basil and a bay leaf per one review. 4. In rummaging through my freezer I found a half bag (about 8 oz.) of froz. spinach that I threw into the sauce. You really couldn't taste it, but I like to think it made it healthier. 5. I took another reviewer's suggestion and slow-cooked the sauce - but on the wood stove since it's still a bit chilly in Maine. 6. Lastly, since I couldn't decide between ricotta and cottage cheese after reading the reviews, I used mostly cottage, but did mix in some ricotta Molto bene!
