I didn't think it had much flavor. The best part was the onions.

This is delicious! I had low expectations judging by the ingredients, but the balance of the sweet onions and salty lentils was great. I added a little bit of cinnamon as other reviewers suggested, and liked it. This recipes is so simple and cheap ... I'll definitely have it again!

Okay if you need a vegetarian meal. Not a huge favorite, only dh and I ate this as a fasting option though but could see making again. Used brown lentils instead of green.

Surprisingly delicious for so few ingredients. Could be a main vegetarian dish or a side.

We enjoyed the fried onions. I did add cumin to the lentils, as per previous suggestions. My family rated it as okay, but not bad if you are looking for a meatless meal.

This is so good! I did add an extra onion as well as 4 cloves of garlic and about 2 tbsp. of cumin to the lentils. This is very flavorful if you are liberal with the spices. I also squeezed a little fresh lemon after it was cooked which added a nice zip. Thanks for posting!

This recipe was yummy. A bit bland though. I did add lots of cumin and the cinnamon to the onions as suggested from other reviewers. Next time I will add masala. I highhhly suggest using non fat greek yogurt as it is thick and creamy as sour cream but with out the calories. I also suggest cooking the onions slowly (I cooked them the entire time the lentils were cooking on a lower heat. They are delicious) and to add more. Will make this again, but needs a little improvement.

Delicious! Following other reviewers, I put a chicken bullion cube in with the lentils & rice and added a teaspoon of cumin and a bit of cinnamon. I will use more of both spices next time. Also, the onions are the best part, so the more you use, the better! I used two, and I'll use three next time.

We had this recipe tonight and really enjoyed it. I'm sure we'll skip the yogurt next time as only 2 out of 4 liked it with the yogurt. This recipe made a very large dish, as a side dish we had enough lentils/rice for at least 10 people, but barely enough onions for 4. I followed the recipe exactly, but I'll make these changes next time: I'll halve the amount of lentils and rice and double the amount of onions. The onions really bring this all together into a very flavorful dish, whether you like the yogurt added or not.

From what I understand, this is the "mac-n-cheese" of the middle east. This was a good simple recipe. I followed the advice of previous reviewer "M.A.H." and used brown rice, cooked it right together with the lentils (I used French green) with 3 1/2 - 4 cups of liquid per recipe. I was most delighted to find it cooked perfectly in my RICE COOKER!!! The onion should be at least doubled...because when browned as dark as possible (20-30 min), is truly the star of the dish. And I did find that chicken broth or base is good, as are several dashes of pepper, and a couple dashes of cumin. Five stars for ease, nutrition, and hearty sustenance :) Oh yes~ yogurt, NOT sour cream!!!

Tried this recipe with the suggestion of others to add cumin and chicken broth and still it did not taste like anything much. In my family the recipe was placed in the discard pile. sorry.

This is an easy dish to put together and healthy too. As a spice fan I thought the original recipe was a bit bland. Sweet onions makes a big difference. I used Vidalia onions which bring out a sweet savory flavor. I tweaked it to my liking by adding cumin, chickpeas, and kasha, garlic and LOTS of onions. Excellent fiber. Thanks for the recipe!

It is a great recipe, but I'm giving it 4 stars because it needs more tweeking in my opinion. I used two onions that I fried really long and will definitely make it with 3 or 4 the next time. I also used more of the spices such as Turmeric powder and more Paprika. For the rice I'll use at least 4 chicken cubes the next time to give it more flavor. Serving this dish with Yoghurt and a side of cucumber salad is perfect! Will definitely make it again! Thanks for sharing this recipe!

I've been a lurker here for years, but this recipe got me to join! The reviews are most helpful. Based on the input, I used two large onions and will use four next time. I also made it very non-Muslim by browning pork in the skillet (and removing it) before I added butter and cooked the onions. I did this while the lentils cooked, so by the time the rice/lentil mixtue was done, the onions were very carmelized. Also used cinnamon with the onions and cumin/curry powder with the lentil/rice mix. Going to try to find garam masala here just for this recipe. Here (we're Am. expats living in Thailand) all the yogurt is thin and way too sweet, so I used sour creme. That definitely made it. After one bite, DH and I agreed that it needed cilantro, so I added a few leafs to the top. It gave nice color and wonderful flavor. This recipe is a real keeper, uses locally available ingredients and works well with my limited kitchen facilities. Hubby and I ate the entire recipe in one sitting!

Good. One onion is NOT enough -- next time will use 3. Used chicken broth to cook lentils. Still needed additional salt for flavor. Otherwise followed directions exactly. Will make again!
