The recipe idea was great, however it took a lot of extra seasoning to make it taste good. I used vegetable broth instead of water. I added mrs. dash regular, celery seed, cumin, white pepper and a red onion to pep up the flavor. After that it was a huge hit. The original recipe just needs some polishing.

Really, really delicious! I made a few tweaks, based on what I had handy, but overall I stayed true to the recipe and was very pleased with the final result. I used a large red onion as a sub for the two whites, used one cup of veg broth and one cup of water instead of two cups of water, cut out the salt (because of the broth) and dumped fresh spinach on top of everything during the last 5 minutes.

This is a great tasting and healthy recipe. I used fresh spinach and canned lentils that I had on hand, which reduced the cooking time significantly. I also added about 1 teaspoon of garam masala, a couple more garlic cloves, a half can of diced tomatoes, and a few glugs of chicken broth. Thanks for sharing!

This was pretty tasty, added fresh spinach and carrots. Something quick and easy to make. I doubled the recipe and had WAY too much water though, had to let it boil down quite a bit. I would add 3 cups of water only if doubling the recipe.

Like other reviewers, I used 1 cup of lentils and 2 1/2 cups chicken stock. I also added the cumin at the beginning to the onions to develop the flavor. Added sliced carrots during last 10 minutes. Used about 2/3 bunch fresh spinach and wilted in pot. Also added pinch of nutmeg with the spinach and flavor was incredible. Serves 4 over rice. Very filling and a different flavor to help shake up dinnertime. Meateaters won't even notice it's vegetarian it's so hearty. Will put in my dinner rotation.

I enjoyed this recipe a lot. I added a little celery with the onion and made it a little thinner with extra water. I found a sprinkle of parmesan cheese adds a nice finishing touch.

This is a great base recipe for lentils. I didn't have spinach so had to leave that out but I added sauted green bell pepper and carrots instead.

Absolutely delicious! Great on the budget and very low-cal and high-nutrient. Next time I'm going to double the lentils as many reviewers have said.

Good idea, thank you. Did alter a bit. Used quick cooking brown lentils, and a load of fresh spinach, and added a chicken stock cube. The spinach only needs to be washed, chopped, and then wilted in, a few moments before serving. DO NOT DRAIN, the liquid is nice, especially over rice.

It's a good recipe. I didn't use as much garlic, but I might next time. I did add about 2/3 cup of white cap sliced mushrooms. It gave it an earthy flavor, which I personally like. It's a good healthy soup as long as you dont add too much salt as my mother was inclined to do. Next time I will subsitute the water for vegetable broth. I bet chicken broth would probably do ok to, for a saltier flavor.

My first attempt at making lentils. I added a can of diced tomatoes, and chili powder along with the cumin, served it over jasmine rice. Yummy and filling.

This is FABULOUS. Reminds me very much of Indian food, which I love. Only changes I made were to add red pepper flakes for some heat, I used low-sodium chicken broth instead of water, and I sauteed one green bell pepper with the onion since I had it around (I don't think the bell pepper added anything but extra veggies can't hurt). Served over brown rice. DELICIOUS. I will definitely be making this again.

I was looking for a good recipe with lentils and I love spinach, but I dont love this recipe. This one had great reviews. I tried it...following the suggestions (only 1 onion) and even doubled the rest of the recipe. I threw it over some rice. The one onion alone added too much to the taste. It wasn't that great. I might suggest throwing some meat in w/ it, but thats just a guess I have because I dont like it enough to try that out. I wont be making this one again.

This is a lovely recipe. It's warming and filling and the aroma alone will make your mouth water. A few changes I made were: I was out of Onions so I used Leeks instead, I added more water because I wanted it a little more "soupy", and I added some cardamom because I find it goes well with cumin.

a delicious vegetarian dish! definitely make sure the onions are nice & brown, this adds wonderful flavor. I too, doubled the lentils (I used red) & used broth in place of the water & then omitted the salt. I used a bunch of fresh spinach instead of frozen & served with warm whole wheat naan. thanks -it was DELICIOUS!

Good. This takes a while and isn't a good option for us during the week, but it was nice to have something healthy and relatively easy to throw together. I doubled the lentils, so now I have leftovers for lunch tomorrow!

I made a few modifications to this recipe and the final product was AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS! I used 1/3 of a large white onion, 1 cup of lentils and 2.5 cups of vegetable broth and omitted the salt. I added a handful of chopped cilantro while the lentils were simmering, and added about 6 oz of fresh spinach and a chopped tomato near the end. I also added about 1/2 tbsp cumin powder. I might try it next time with a bit of turmeric and some chili powder. The final dish tasted great!
