We've always included pound cake on our family menus, and through the years, I've tried many recipes, I can honestly say this one is the best! It has a very fine, rich texture that makes it unusually smooth. That texture, plus fantastic flavor, makes this pound cake a special treat each time we serve it.

On Sundays, friends and neighbors would stop at my Auntie Rae and Uncle Gene's house. Auntie Rae never cooked on Sundays, so she'd make this coffee cake on Sunday evening, from her own special 'receipt', as she called it. The next day, she'd serve it from the warming closet of her cast-iron kitchen range.

My great-aunt gave me this recipe. It's especially delicious when rhubarb is in season, and tastes even better with the old-fashioned milk topping. But you'll love it even with frozen rhubarb and 'modern-day' whipped topping!

My best friend shared the recipe for this delightful dessert. It goes great with a cup of tea, too. Notice that there is no leavening in the recipe--the carbonated soda does the job! --Kelly Ward Hartman, Cape Coral, Florida
