  1. Toast the bread slices to your desired darkness. When done, spread lightly with butter or margarine. Place a slice of tomato on the buttered side of one slice, and top with a slice of cheese. Season to taste with salt and pepper and place a slice of lettuce on if desired. Top with the remaining slice of bread. Enjoy!

Boy this brings back childhood memories! This sandwich reminds me of my late Grandpa Tom so I just had to make it. He always planted tomatoes in his garden and used to make this for me when I was a kid. We never used lettuce and always topped it with salt, pepper and plenty of mayo. He'd enjoy his with an ice cold beer and I'd enjoy mine with a tall glass of Kool Aid. This definitely is the classic gardener's relaxing meal as the submitter states. Sometimes the simplest things in life are the best.

I usually don't toast the bread, but do add lots of mao, salt and pepper. In addition, I always sliced a hard boiled egg on top.A slice or two of bacon never hurts.

I have always made this! And I love it! I only do one thing different. I use mayo instead of the butter. Very yummy! And very quick to make!

Well there's nothing better on a hot summer day. But I have to say, a tomato sandwich without MAYO might as well stay home. I give you credit for listing a common gardner's summertime treat! YUMMY.

This is GREAT!!! I used fresh tomatoes, right from the garden and used miracle whip instead of mayo or butter. Thanks for the recipe!!

This is absolutely divine! Not only is it good with tomatoes, something I don't even like all that much, but it's also wonderful if you omit the tomatoes altogether and substitute them with sliced bell peppers, (color of your choice), and just a bit of mustard along with the butter on the toasted bread, and a thick slab of swiss cheese. It's wonderful on a warm night, watching the sunset in swirling gold with an enormous jar of sweet tea between you and a loved one. Thanks so much. t.
