This was excellent. Because of some of the reviews I read, I didn't use the full amount of liquid smoke. In the future, I will. We like a smokier flavor. I did add a Bannana leaf wrap around the roast prior to placing it in the slow cooker. That added a more authentic flavor, according to my husband who lived in Hawaii. Will make again.

This was a big crowd pleaser. My 9 year old loved it so much he would take it to school in his thermos for lunch

Very easy to make. The pork itself was a little bland and dry, but that may have been my fault not the recipe. I found adding BBQ sauce after it was cooked was necessary. Good recipe, but I'm going to keep looking for another one.

I made this for a luau and had several people ask for the recipe. It was very simple to do--put it in the crock pot and forget it! I probably added double the liquid smoke to taste. I found the Hawaiian sea salt at a health food store. It truly made the party.

It's goooood! First time I messed up, because I tried to cut the recipe down to just a couple pounds of meat. Well it overcooked in my pot because I was out of the house and not able to check the slow cooker. My fault. So today I picked up a new hunk of just about 6 pounds. If there's anything that needs adjusting it's the cooking time. Even on slow, it took less than 10 hours and one flip of the shoulder to cook completely. My slow cooker is (6 quarts?) and the extra weight in the shoulder paid off. When I used two pounds there wasn't enough juice in the cooker to tenderize the meat. 6.3lbs barely fit my crock pot, but the juices nearly covered the meat, moistened it with Alea salty goodness, and fell apart. I used to pay $20 for a serving of Kalua pig half this size. We'll be having this often!

This was so good! I'm lucky enough to have a niece at the University of Hawaii, so she got me the sea salt. I followed the recipe exactly, but next time, I would add more liquid smoke. My son and I couldn't stop picking chunks of meat out of the crock pot!!

This was the BEST and EASIEST recipie I have found on this site so far. The biggest challenge was finding the Hawaiian Sea Salt. (Got it at Henry's Market) Prepare it exactly as written and you will love it!

Perfect as written! Will add 1 more Tablespoon of Liquid Smoke next time. The leftovers are frozen to make pulled pork sandwiches and pork enchilada's. Very versatile recipe. Going into regular rotation at our house.

This is wonderful, just made a couple tiny changes. I used a 3lb roast, rubbed on the liquid smoke, kosher salt, a crushed clove of garlic,a tiny sprinkle of dry ginger, then cut up a small garlic clove & put it into the meat. I cooked it on low for about 7 hrs and it barely needed any shredding because it just fell apart. I did remove the meat from the crock pot to separate the fat from the juices (used someone's tip of putting liquids in the freezer to easily remove the fat) and added juice back to the meat. I warmed bakery sub rolls in the oven and served bbq sauce on the side which it didn't really need. I may try just a touch more liquid smoke next time, but it was a huge hit! My husband rated it 2nd place to a meal we recently had in Maui, and said it was ONLY because last time we were actually IN Hawaii. Thanks for this super easy, tasty recipe that will be a regular at our house!

WOW! This is awesome! I can't believe how something so simple can taste SO good! This will become a regular in my house. I couldn't find Hawaiian sea salt, but the plain old regular sea salt apparently works just fine, cause I can't imagine it tasting better than it did tonight!

This is my first slow cooker experience and I'm hooked! I followed the instructions to the letter (surprisingly, the Hawaiian salt was easy to find @ Fresh Market) and it turned out perfect. The meat was tender and the juice made a fantastic gravy with the addition of a little flour simmered on the stove. Leftovers were great with some barbecue sauce on rolls. I shut the cooker off after about 14 hours but an hour either way wouldn't have hurt it. I was able to take the bone out without any effort as the meat just falls away from it. The only thing I'll do different next time is put a little more liquid smoke just for my own taste. Overall, thanks for a fab recipe!

Made it twice now and came out perfect both times! Definitely use Alaean Red Sea salt if you can find it. I also reccomend the hickory liquid smoke. After only 10 hours (half way done) it was so tender the bone slipped out when flipping it over in the crock. Serve with some medium grain rice, and you're having your own taste of the islands at home!

This needed some doctoring! It was really bland with only rubbing the outside with salt and one tbsp of smoke. I used a 7 lb bone in pork shoulder, cooked on low for 17 hours it was perfectly cooked, but bland. I even added some chili pepper flakes and garlic powder to the rub before cooking based on other reviewers. i was afraid to over salt based on reviews, and i am super sensitive to salt. It needed more salt. I ended up finding another recipe because i wanted the cabbage with it. The other recipe is more authentic. it called for 1/4 c salt and smoke each, i added it to the shredded meat and it was perfect!! I took some of the juices from the pork and julienned cabbage into 1/8 strips sauteed it in juices with some broth for 5 minutes and served with rice! I wish I had mac salad now!

Due to the fact that I had to cook 2 huge roasts simultaneously, to the tune of about 15 #'s total, these wouldn't fit into my crockpot. I ended up cooking them together in my dome covered turkey roaster. This was such a simple, carefree, easy thing to cook, I almost felt like I was somehow cheating. I started them at 11:30 pm in a 200 degree oven and by 7, when my daughter woke up for school, she thought that I had bacon cooking. The smell was so tempting and mouthwatering I could hardly stand it. I took it out of the oven about 2 pm and let it rest. I needed it for an event that evening and didn't bother to shred it until almost dinner time. Quickly re-heated it and got rave reviews from all party goers. I served it with fenadeni sauce from this site and steamed rice. Just delicious!
