A great recipe for a beginner. I found many different recipes on this website and this one seamed the simiplest and easiest to make. Plus, I already had everything on hand. I, like other reviewers, did not use tomato juice. Rather, I removed the skin off of four tomatoes, diced them, covered them in water, and cooked until boiling. Then, I pureed them and add them in replace of the juice. A bit complicated, but it save me a trip to the store. Thanks for the recipe!

this was just "okay"; nothing special, but it tasted fine . . . I was just expecting "spectacular" from all of the reviewers.

This was great! I didn't add the tomato juice, I just used bottled salsa as someone else sugested, and diced tomatoes. My fiance loved this because he doesn't like spicy food, but I would add some red pepper next time. I also served it with tortilla chips, sour cream, and fresh avocado.

This was really good. I used one large can of crushed tomatoes and one small can of tomato sauce. I used one large can of chili beans and one small can of pinto beans. I followed the seasoning exactly except I added about 1 teaspoon of cocoa powder. It was very good while I was camping.

this makes the best chili. I generally add more beans because I like my chili quite thick. This is a spicy delicious chili that I have made many times. i keep it in the freezer and have somewhenver I like. TWhen it is gone I make up some more. Filling with a low calorie content.

Great Recipe! I like more beans, so I added one more can of chili beans & I add a little sour cream to the top when it's done. YUMMY!

I also used diced tomatoes instead of the tomato juice and didn't drain the kidney or pinto beans. Very good and hot enough for my husband and me. I have been looking for a good chili for a long time.

Pretty good chili. You definitely need to add your own heat as this wasn't hot or spicy at all. A good base chili.

This is a great simple crockpot recipe. I used 1 - 15 oz of tomato sauce and 1 - 15 oz can of diced tomatoes for chili. It was sure easy after broning the meat. It was even better the second night for our guests! KR - Hermiston, OR

Really easy to cook for a first time Chili maker. My boyfriend liked the corn bread more (traderjoes box) We both like spicy so i added red pepper flakes. I think next time i'll add garlic while browning the meat. But I can't complain to much, it is going to feed us for a couple days!

Very, very good. Followed recipe (almost) using a slow cooker. Couldn't find Pinto so only used Red Kidney beans. Instead of chili powder, used Mexican hot Jalapeno sauce. Tried it again - this time on the stove. Again, no Pinto availabale so I used cans of Lentils and Red Kidney. Used a small can of diced tomatos instead of tomato juice (along with some ketchup & salsa). Used brown sugar instead of white. Went easy on the spices. Served it up with shredded cheddar and fritos topping - even better than the first time - It's now a 5* !!

The mixture of spices smelled wonderfully as it cooked! I am giving it 3 stars as I found it to be too salty. Will try again with half the amount of salt. I highly recommend Garlic Bread on the side & letting it simmer on the stove uncovered if you want a thicker base.

This turned out great! I followed the recipe as written and did add a TBS. of cocoa powder as one person had suggested. I tried it just as a soup before putting it over noodles and it was great. Even better once I added the cheese and sour cream! My hubby even gobbled this up and went back for more. Thanks for the recipe George!

Agree that this is way too runny and bland. Lori, chili is not supposed to be runny and watery, if it is then it is not chili. Con carne just means with meat.

Not bad. Only used 1# of meat (family not big meat eaters), added roughly 2 CUPS celery, and it was pretty good.

I'm rating it 5 stars because my child and BF both really liked it. The only changes I made were: No onions....I used onion powder instead. No green pepper because neither one of us really like it and I didn't have any. Other than that, I followed it to the T. It was good, but nothing OUTSTANDING, in my opinion. I most likely will make this again since they both seemed to really like it. I'm just saying...it was GOOD, but nothing that would really kick me in the arse and make me take notice.

This is a great basic, old fashioned recipe! I have made it similarly for years. I use 2 cans of kidney beans and don't use pinto beans. I use only a 15 oz. can of tomato sauce. In addition to the tomato juice I put in 2 large cans of diced tomatoes. What is chili without tomatoes? I use chili powder, onions, garlic, pepper, green peppers and bay leaves to flavor it. For those of you who whine about it being too runny, it's supposed to be this way, it's not a thick yucky con carne. I love crackers in mine!
