I loved this recipe when ground italian pork sausage was used in place of the plain pork. Using chopped tomatoes in place of tomato sauce was a further improvement. For a quick-cooking whole grain alternative to the rice, we liked quinoa.

NO FLAVOR, MUSHY AND LACKED ANY UMPH. THERE WAS NOTHING I COULD DO TO HELP IT OUT. I TRIED EXTRA SPICES, EXTRA TOMATO SAUCE A CAN OF CHILIES ETC. NOTHING MADE THIS ANYTHING BUT A DISAPPOINTMENT.

I agree with the previous reviewer. My husband and I thought this recipe was quite flavourful, and the leftovers tasted just as good. I didn't sub anything, but I did leave out the fennel (we don't care for it). I used organic veggies and tomato sauce, which we both feel taste better to begin with. Thanks, Betty!

Don't be so hasty as to believe bad review about this dish.I substituted a pound of hot ground sausage in place of the plain ground pork. I cooked the cabbage in the chicken broth before mixing all the rest together.Also added a dash ground nutmeg. This was VERY tasty fixed this way.
