A good, moist Irish Soda Bread. Some notes, however: 1. The photo shows raisins in the bread - there are no raisins called for in the recipe. An inexperienced baker would not know the technique for adding raisins. 2. My bread was done in 60 minutes. The bread was moist and wonderful. 3. Additionally,it is great eaten shortly after baking, and does not need to be "wrapped in foil for several hours". Just give it a little time to cool slightly. Thanks for a good recipe!

This was a very moist and tasty bread - a bit crumbly and less firm than typical Irish Soda Bread. My family really liked it, but my husband suggested that it's more of a "dessert bread." It probably would make a good base for strawberry shortcake.

This was the worst bread I have ever made, it was in the oven for almost 90 minutes, and it still never really got done, not only that, but I followed the recipe, and only put in one loaf pan (big mistake, as it seeped over the pan on the oven floor) Also the recipe picture showed raisins but never mentioned it in recipe. I put a 1/2 cup of raisins in anyway, after boiling them in water for a while. The raisins went to the bottom of the pan. After I took it out of oven, it started to shrink in the pan, when I did try ant taste it,( the next day) it was greasey at the bottom and that is when I found that it was not done in the middle. Never going to use this recipe again. Which is a real shame as most of the recipes turn out really good on this site.

It might be irresistible but it is not soda bread. I'll skip the heritage lesson and say that if you reduce the liquids by half, knead the dough and add a cross hatch then you will have a decent version of soda bread that a non-Celt could love.

Outstanding recipe. I scaled it up to 80 portions and served it at a function. It was a huge success!

This is a wonderful recipe. Served it for lunch today along with Irish Bacon and Cabbage Soup from this website. All the other soda bread recipes I've tried have been rather bland & dry but this one was a huge hit with my guests. Nice & moist with just a touch of sweetness. I noticed the picture that was with the recipe looked like it contained raisins so I added about 1/2 cup of them to the flour mixture & it was just about right. This recipe will definately be added to my favorites!

I have made this recipe many times and have reviewed it before. It is a great recipe, but the photo looks nothing like the bread when I make it. Although raisins/currants are often in Irish Soda Bread, this one doesn't have them and doaesn't need them. That's part of the goodness of this recipe. Thank you for sharing.

This recipe is fantastic. I have taken it to many potlucks and I am always asked for the recipe. Do let it rest in the foil before eating it really does get better with age.

For all those wishing to make an authentic-style Irish soda bread, use another recipe. Just because the recipe calls for soda and buttermilk does not make it Irish! Too Much SUGAR!! This is more like a sweet American biscuit bread. That said, the recipe does come out crusty and flaky, and would be good for a breakfast bread but that wasn't what I was trying to make!

What a disappointment. From the reviews, I expected a dense, moist, loaf and what I ended up with was a dry, hard, flavorless hunk of bread that overflowed during baking despite following the recipe exactly as written. Will not make again.

I followed the recipe to a T except I added raisins and caraway seeds. It rose in the pan without overflowing creating a delicious, crunchy top. The only problem was that it was raw in the center causing me to discard the two center slices. I would definitely make this again, however, I'd use a 8 x 8 pan.

This is a crowd-pleaser. I substiuted two cups of 1% milk with two tablespoons of lemon juice( letting it stand for 5 minutes) rather than buttermilk. The recipe produced a moist, flavorful, delicious bread that two of my guests requested the recipe for. This may not be traditional soda bread, but it certainly is a great rendition.

This is a simple recipe, and very tasty. I believe the nutritional data may account for the addition of raisins or currents, even though they are not listed in the ingredients. I used cranberries in place of raisins and did the math for nutritional value, which came out to 185 calories (using 1/2 c measurement on the cranberries).

I cannot eat bread, I have a gluten allergy, but I live to bake, it is a passion and my family always loves it when I make something different. I had 1/2 a container of buttermilk in the fridge form a gluten free bread I had made for myself and I didn't want to throw the rest away. My mom loves her Irish cakes and breads so I thought I would give this recipe a try. She couldn't stop raving about it, my brother in law wants me to make more. I made 2 loaves, one with currents and raisins and another just plain. Both are getting gobbled up, this will be a holiday staple for all occasions now. Thanks so very much for your wonderful recipe!
