My family has made these for as long as I can remember. The original recipe does call for the hamburger bun, but we always used onion buns (found in the bakery section of the grocery store). Such a great sandwich to waste on a hamburger bun in my opinion.

I used whole wheat hamburger buns and less butter. SO GOOD! Love the addition of the poppy seeds!

Great recipe! I love the combination of ham and swiss so I had to try these. The horseradish definitely gives these a nice "kick". Perfect with a bowl of tomato soup for a quick meal!

Excellent recipe! Delicious hot sandwich. I used French Bread. This was very filling. I used dried minced onion, horseradish-dijon mayo and added a bit of regular yellow mustard in. I loved the poppy seed flavor and wish I had added more. This would be great for a party as you can make up a whole loaf of bread sub sandwich and slice it up after baking into serving sizes. Definitely a keeper! Thanks for this gem. Love it!

These are very good, probably 4.5 stars. My mom used to make broiled ham n swiss, with just mayo & mustard, and I thought this recipe had some curious ingredients. I will say I think the onion is out of place. I didn't have horseradish mustard so (without having seen the footnote that didn't print) I just used part regular mustard and part horsey sauce, and that and the poppy seeds were an interesting touch. I did these in the toaster oven which was easier & less utility-using, but they did take a bit longer. I can't see this being 4 servings - I easily scarfed down 2 of these.

This is a nice ham and cheese sandwich - nothing outstanding but had good taste and was filling. I followed the editor’s note and it worked out wonderfully. I made the recipe exactly as stated with the exception of omitting the poppy seeds.

My mother made these when I was growing up. She uses yellow mustard and will saute the onions in butter before adding the mustard and poppy seeds. She also uses shaved ham. I like to take them camping, they are easily heated over a campfire.

I seasoned these with Penzey's sandwich sprinkle...they tasted wonderful! I think the temperature needs to be 400 so the sandwich get crispy and warm all the way through...mine at 350 weren't hot in the middle.

Very filling and satisfying with a cup of soup. I followed the suggestion at the bottom of the recipe and used spicy brown mustard mixed with horseradish. Also added a bit of mayo.
