Hot Ham 'n' Cheese

"A fast four-ingredient spread makes these sandwiches a cut above the ordinary. They can be made ahead of time and popped into the oven later."

INGREDIENTS

  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine, softened
  • 2 tablespoons horseradish mustard
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped onion
  • 2 teaspoons poppy seeds
  • 4 hamburger buns, split
  • 8 slices fully cooked ham
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese

DIRECTIONS

  1. In a bowl, combine the butter, mustard, onion and poppy seeds. Spread over cut sides of buns. Layer ham and cheese on bottom halves; replace tops. Wrap each sandwich in foil; place on a baking sheet.
  2. Bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes or until cheese is melted.

Editor's Note

As a substitute for horseradish mustard, combine 1 tablespoon spicy brown mustard with 1 tablespoon prepared horseradish.

Didn't add the poppy seeds......love the spread on the sandwiches, made them perfect. So good.

I grew up with these...known in the family as "Delicious Little Sandwiches." We actually use the grinder attachment on the food processor and run the ham, cheese, and onion through it. Just mix in the butter, mustard and poppy seed, put on a bun, wrap in foil, and put in the oven. FABULOUS!! They freeze great, but they usually don't last long enough to make it to the freezer! Also warm up well in the microwave.

We made these as hot turkey 'n' cheese, and they were great.
