'WE BAKED at least two batches of bread each week for our family of six. We also spent hours (or so it seemed) churning the butter to spread on it, which we especially loved to do while it was still warm. Fried chicken never tasted quite as good without homemade bread-and-butter sandwiches.'

This simple recipe does not require kneading and calls for just one rising time. Slices are absolutely delicious toasted and topped with butter.

This handy recipe lets me start the preparation the night before. The day of the party, I shape the rolls before guests arrive, let them rise and pop them into the oven for fresh-baked rolls in minutes. --Lynn McAllister, Mt. Ulla, North Carolina

I'm an avid bread baker and was thrilled to find this recipe. It makes delectably different rolls that are a hit wherever I take them. The onion and mustard flavors go so well with ham or hamburgers and are special enough to serve alongside an elaborate main dish. -Melodie Shumaker, Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania

The dough for these plain white bagels can be prepared in the bread machine or kneaded by hand. To cook, simmer them in boiling water and then bake in the oven.

This bread features instant potato flakes for a soft and tender crumb. If you prefer, allow the yeast and water to stand for a bit before mixing in other ingredients, to diminish this bread 's strong flavor.

This recipe was given to me more than 15 years ago by a friend. The unique combination of sage, celery seed and nutmeg makes this bread deliciously different.
