I'm not a big potato fan, but I went back for seconds on this dish! This is an excellent recipe, although I did switch up a few things: I carmelized a whole large sliced onion in 8 tablespoons of butter (instead of using 1/3 cup chopped and 5 tablespoons until tender), I doubled the pepper, and I added 1 cup of cheddar and monterey jack shredded cheeses to the boiling milk. This took 90 minutes to bake. My family is already requesting the dish for Thanksgiving.

Well I personally love scalloped potatoes and I made this for hubby tonight. He's very picky and complained there is no flavour. I added 4 cloves of garlic. He doesn't like cheese so I can't do that. I won't do bacon because I don't like that. Not sure what one can do to scalloped potatoes to give them more flavour and still keep to a more or less traditional dish. So anyway 4 stars, only cause of my very very very picky hubby.

this recipe is good. I usually half the recipe since it makes way too much for my famliy of 4. I actually keep the onion, flour, and salt measurements the same...but use less milk and potatoes. It actually turns out better this way for me. The original recipe (if followed exactly) is slightly bland in flavor, so I would advise you double the onion and add a little more salt for flavoring if you make this recipe.

A good, basic recipe. I made a half recipe and did it in a 8x8" square pan and it was done in about an hour. I think next time I will add a a little garlic when I saute the onions and maybe a bit of mustard powder and nutmeg to the sauce.

These turned out beautifully...very rich and creamy.I added some grated gruyere cheese about 15 minutes before taking them out. My guests loved them. The only issue with this recipe? They took much longer than the 60-70 minutes stated. Mine were just perfect at about an hour and forty minutes.

The simplest and creamiest scalloped potatoes I have ever made. So much better than the boxed ones and just as easy.

Really pleased with this recipe. My 97 yr old mother just told me that they were the best she has had in a long time. Also not too complicated to make.

My only problem was: it takes a looooooooong time to cook, much longer than 60-70 minutes. I've always had a problem with scalloped /au gratin potatoes taking an incredible time to cook. I think partially precooking the spuds first cuts down on the time in the oven. Still, this is a tasty recipe.

Yummy! I would have given it 5 stars but it was a little bit bland. Next time I'll try adding parsley, maybe some more salt, pepper, and maybe even kick it up with bell pepper, mushrooms and extra onions . Overall a very nice, creamy texture! This is a great start but I think everyone should add extra spices and/or ingredients to make it their own. Thank you, Christine!

My husband loved it, as did a friend we had over. I wasn't a huge fan because they tasted pretty bland. Even added some parmesan cheese.

These are what I would consider traditional scalloped potatoes, wonderful flavour. Many recipes call for cheese and other spices, but if you just want a nice 'potato' dish, this is the one. I use more onion and layer it with the potato, and make sure to use whole milk or 1/2 and 1/2 for the sauce. Delicious.

I added some velveeta cheese to the sauce & salted each layer of potatoes. I also put sauce on top of each layer -not sure if that made a difference or not. I must have cut the potatoes too thick because they took a long time to cook! The sauce seemed thick enough at first but while it was in the oven it became very watery. I ended up ladling watery sauce out a few times. Also, for some reason my scalloped potatoes always seem to appear curdled from the milk. Even with their faults, they ended up being tasty -served with Brown Sugar Meatloaf from this site.

Very hearty recipe, if you like rich foods with sauce. The sauce is amazing rich and creamy with the milk, flour. I cut the recipe in 1/2 and put in a 2 quart caserole it cut time in half and added cheese on top and more SALT PEPPER to the sliced potatoes. Yummy, served it with breaded pork tenderloin recipe found here.
