Directions

  1. Place the dark and golden raisins in a medium bowl. Dissolve baking soda in boiling water, and pour over raisins. Let stand overnight without stirring.
  2. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease three 1 pound sized coffee cans.
  3. In a large bowl, stir together the flour, sugar and salt. Stir in the raisins with their water, and the oil until well blended. Batter will be thick. Divide the batter evenly between the 3 cans.
  4. Bake for 1 hour in the preheated oven, or until a toothpick inserted into the crown comes out clean. Lay cans on their side to loosen the bread as it cools.

This recipe I have known, made and enjoyed for many years. If you mix about a half the amount of the ingredients listed and use smaller cans(soup cans), you can make this on a camp fire. A tin foil cover helps. Don't put the cans right on the coals. Hence Hobo bread!

I did this a little different... purely because i wanted something quick and easy... Did it with dark brown sugar (stil the full 400g) and just mixed it all together and bunged it on the oven... Tok about 45m... Not bad bread at all!

I was looking for this recipe b/c my Grandma used to make hobo bread. It was delicious and brought back fun memories. Thanks for sharing!

i was initially going to rate this a 3 but the days after i made it it tasted way better. Very quick and quite tasty. I might make again but it was nothing spectacular.

Great bread easy to make and its great for breakfast with a little cream cheese.
