Directions

  1. Combine 2 cups flour, salt, sugar, and yeast in a large bowl. Stir in the water, shortening, parsley, rosemary, and thyme. Use an electric mixer to beat on low speed for 1 minute, scraping bowl frequently. Turn mixer to medium, and beat for an additional 1 minute, scraping bowl frequently. Stir in remaining 1 cup flour; mix until smooth. Scrape batter from sides of bowl. Cover, and let rise in warm place for 35 to 40 minutes.
  2. Grease a 9x5 loaf pan. Stir down batter by beating about 25 strokes. Scrape batter into greased pan; pat down with floured hands. Cover pan. Let dough rise in warm place until doubled, about 30 minutes. Do not allow dough to over-rise.
  3. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  4. Bake in preheated oven until the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom, 40 to 45 minutes. Brush top with margarine. Remove from pan, and cool on wire rack.

  • To substitute fresh herbs, use: 1 1/2 teaspoons chopped rosemary, 1/2 teaspoon chopped thyme, and 2 tablespoons chopped parsley.

Easy and yummy! As others suggested, I used olive oil instead of shortening, and I added 1/2 tsp. garlic powder. I didn't have rosemary, so I used oregano (we were having it with my homemade spaghetti and meatballs, and there is oregano in the sauce), and it was very tasty. Everyone loved it! Word of caution: don't use a handheld mixer! When I added the third cup of flour it nearly burned the motor out! I will use my food processor next time. I am also going to try sea salt/kosher salt instead of table salt next time as well. Mine was done in 38 minutes but would have been ok at 40.

Are you supposed to take it out of the oven, out of the pan, tap it on the bottom and, then if it isn't done, put it all back and finish cooking it. Can hardly trust in the person who wrote this!

Very good bread!!! I agree, it does closely resemble the stuff you get at Macaroni Grill. The only changes I made to the recipe were to sub dill for thyme (I was out..oops) and also added on 1/2 tsp garlic powder. The bread was nice & crusty on the outside & chewy inside. Also, I love how there is no kneading invloved; this would be a very good recipe for someone who is just learning how to make bread. Thanks for sharing!! :)

SO SO easy and SO SO tasty. no kneading!! and no messy food processor parts to clean. took the advice of another reviewer and added 1/2tsp of garlic powder. great for sandwiches or on the side of any meal. Will FOR SURE make again. made the house smell AMAZING.

Loved this bread! It reminds me of the bread at Macaroni Grill - yummy! And easy to make, too! I didn't have parsley on hand, so I used oregano to complement the pasta dinner it accompanied. Very tasty. Thanks!

Only change I made was to use EVOO instead of shortening and margarine. Used a whisk instead of a blender. Good flavor but very mild. Next time will add oregano, garlic, marjoram, etc. to make it zing a little more. Served it toasted with butter and 4 men made short work of a loaf.

I made this in my bread machine, basic white bread setting, and it turned out perfect. I omitted the parsley (none on hand) and added garlic powder per other reviewers. It sliced easily.

Melt in your mouth, deliciousness! This was sooo good. I am in the process of making my second loaf already after a few weeks of making the first. The only changes I made were to substitute oregano for the thyme and olive oil for the shortening. Absolutely perfect, thank you!!!!
