There could not possibly be a simpler way to make delicious split pea soup! I just tasted this at the Oregon relatives, begged the recipe and made it myself for the first time. Their version called for chicken broth instead of water -- but that's the only change I made. I agree that a little milk or cream added at the end makes a difference in the flavor and texture, not just the ratio of liquid. Happy to find the recipe on this site (as usual!). This one's going in my book!

Wow!!! Love this recipe! It was so easy to make & full of flavor. I was truly impressed. The next day it did thicken..almost as a condensed soup..so I would add a little bit of water if you don't like your soup too thick.

I joined allrecipes to leave this comment! This soup is soo good...I love it! I made a few changes when I read other reviews 1) I used 6cups of chicken broth2) I used half an onion 3) I added 3 stalks of celery 4) I used skim milk. Hearty and Healthy I may say and my family Loved it! I cooked it on Low for 6 hours and High for 1. The best split pea recipe!

This soup was amazing! My boyfriend said it was the best soup he's ever had. The only changes I made was I added 1 diced celery stalk, I used chicken stock instead of water and I added an extra cup of stock. I also used a left over ham bone to flavor the soup. This is such a good way to use leftover ham.

This recipe is SO good, even my 7 year old loves it. I made a few changes after reading others' advice. I ditched the milk and used chicken broth instead of water. I also doubled the recipe, but had to cook it 9 hours on high to get the right consistency. The only thing I wish I'd done differently is to either have used 1/2 chicken broth & 1/2 water or to ditch the additional salt as it turned out too salty for my preference. Still really yummy!

This was a great split pea soup recipe. Not sure if adding the milk made that difference, but one of the best homemade soups I've had.

The prep time for this is not five minutes unless everything is already chopped and the peas are rinsed. If you need to rinse the peas, chop the ham, dice and chop veggies the prep time is closer to 30 minutes.

I feel like there were so many alterations to this recipe that I couldn't give the original 5 stars.
