SO HAPPY I FOUND THIS RECIPE! I'm surprised to learn this is a southern dish as it's a common dish served in local Hawaiian restaurants (served over white short grain rice). This is my favorite dish to order so it makes me even more excited that it came out SO GOOD ("SO ONO" in Hawaii)! It's on par with some of the best I've tasted! I made it for family dinner and everyone loved it. They were surprised I made everything from scratch, even the gravy, and said that it tasted better than the ones they've had in restaurants. I'm giving it 4 stars because I did take the advice of the other reviewers and don't think it would have been as good had I not. I almost doubled the gravy recipe (I ran out of beef broth - 1 can makes approx 1.5 cups) and I think it was just perfect! I also added a touch of milk to thicken, cooked the onions in the drippings separately AFTER the hamburger was moved to a plate and added mushrooms to the onions. Even though I used 3/4 of a medium onion, and 1/2 of a basket of sliced fresh mushrooms - I feel I could have added even more. I added about 1/4 tsp salt since others described it as a little bland. It came out PERFECT and I will definitely add this to my regular rotation. This was easy to make even though the ingredients list looked long and possibly complicated. It really isn't! Don't get intimidated by that - try it! Thank you Mrs. Trader!

awesome...homestyle Southerm cookin! I've made this twice adn the most important thing you need to do is....use seasoned bread crumbs!!! The first time I made this it was spectacular...the 2nd was not and it was the bread crumbs. we used Italian ...but there are others, just don't use plain. Also...mushrooms are a bonus! Onions and mushrooms just go together very well, esp over hamburger steak. Men love this...well mine did. I loved it and my husband asks me to me it once a week.

Pretty good, listened to other reviewers tho, and doubled the gravy, (I'm glad I did) I also added some fresh garlic. Would have given it five stars if I didn't have to alter it, even my picky eaters loved it.

This was awesome. The whole family enjoyed this hearty dish. Great over mashed potatoes! And, easy for a mom with 3 kids under 4! Will be making this often.

It was good, a bit on the salty side...but it could have been because we used a boullion cube & water for beef broth. Probably will make again, but try with less seasoning salt & with low sodium beef broth.

This had to be the best hamburger steak that I have ever eaten. Even the gravy (which I doubled) was delicious and I usually can't make good gravy. My guests raved about it too. Hubby wanted to make it again the next night!

This was so, so good! Followed recipe except I doubled the gravy per another reviewer's suggestion & I had a red bell pepper I needed to use, so I added it in with the onion. It's been requested that I make this again soon! Thanks.

This was really good. I made it last night and didn't have enough beef broth so I used vegetable broth and the gravy was amazing! I have REALLY picky kids so that is the only reason this didn't get 5 stars! My husband even said it was "pretty" good and normally he says nothing so for him to comment means it must be good! Thank you!

This recipe was pretty tasty....a nice comfort food. I added some fresh garlic and dried onions to the meat, and I grilled my hamburger "steaks", and then caramelized the onions along with some mushrooms and made my own gravy from beef stock and cornstarch. Smothered the "steaks" with the onion mushroom gravy and served with mashed potatoes.

My husband and I loved this recipe, but the kids did not. That is why it only got 4 stars. I doubled the gravy like everyone else suggested and served it over mashed potatoes. I added mushrooms to the gravy as well per the request of my husband. I will make this again when the kids have dinner plans somewhere else.

I was a bit worried about this, after reading some of the negative reviews, but it turned out well. It had a nice flavor to it. I do not think it is anything I would add to our weekly rotation, but it is a nice alternative.
