this reminds me of the "coffee can stew" we made in girl scouts though we used a layer of bacon, as well as green beans, and didn't use tomatoes but hey I can't wait to try this. I am going to add garlic, RoTel tomatoes, chili powder, etc. but still can't wait. Wonder how it would be with mushroom soup instead of tomatoes?

I made this for may family last night and they loved it. The only changes I made were I added a couple of cloves of crushed garlic on top of the potatoes and I used Italian style chopped tomatoes. It came out great. I was a little nervous that the meat would burn on the bottom but it didn't and it cooked perfectly. Like others have said you do not cook the meat ahead of time. It goes in raw. This is a great cheap meal!

USE RAW MEAT! DO NOT BROWN IT FIRST! That is the trick to this recipe. It doesn't say to brown the meat first because you are not supposed to. Please don't knock this recipe if you don't follow the instructions. This is the perfect weekday meal for my busy family. I almost always have the ingredients on hand, so it fits well into my low-budget meal planning.

I like this casserole; I can serve it to my picky husband and he likes it. It is easy to fix. Unlike some, I do not brown the ground beef ahead, just crumble it into the sauce pan. I do have to cook it a bit longer to make sure the potatoes are done.

I made this for dinner tonight and baked it in the oven instead of cooking it on top of the stove. I also made up my own "taco seasoning" and sprinkled it liberally on all the layers. I served it topped with sour cream, salsa, and grated cheese. My only complaint was that it took forever for the potatoes to cook, even though I sliced them very thin. It took about 2 hours. Other than that, my husband and I both really enjoyed it, and it was super quick to assemble using things we always have on hand. Will definitely make again.

Loved it! The next time I make it, I'll use very lean beef, since I put the meat into the pan raw. I served it with sour cream and ketchup on the side.

I amde this last night as I had all the ingredients on hand. I tweaked it a bit. I substituted Lipton's Onion soup mix for the beef boullion and added garlic and worchestershire sauce and Djion mustard as others suggested. I also threw in some carrots. A note, I did not brown the hamburger first, I just threw it in raw, as the recipe did not specify to brown it ahead of time. I think this gave it more moisture. It was a very hearty, quick meal and we will make it again. Thanks!

My kids and I loved this. It's cheap and quick and made of things you almost always have. I thought it had great flavor for so few ingredients. Just lightly salt and pepper each layer putting the onion on top of each hamburger layer. Quick prep time.
