This is a really good ham beans recipe. I liked the brown sugar and red pepper to add flavor.

I was looking for the ham HOCK & bean recipe that gramma used to make. Tried this in the crockpot, except just threw the Hocks in and let them cook all day with the beans. Cut the meat off the hocks at the end...........MMMMMM!! This was a great improvement over just beans, onion & hocks! THANKS!

My mom used to just boil ham with these beans and water, so you can imagine how much better this recipe is to me! Love the sweetness with the spiciness. Very comforting on a cool fall evening.

The sweetness of the brown sugar and the hot bite of the cayenne is what made this dish really stand out! Was a little nervous about the brown sugar so only usd 1/4 c. It depends on personal taste but I felt the 1/4 c. was the perfect amount, anymore would have made it too much. Used a ham bone from a spiral ham I had left over and threw in 2 chix. bouillon cubes, we did not find it too salty but some may. We really liked this!

These beans were delightful. Next time I MAY use less brown sugar as my husband does not like the sweet taste as much as I do. Easy and Yummy.

I used my crockpot for this recipe. Soaked the beans overnight and proceeded per the recipe. Tweaked the flavor by using a flavored hot sauce instead of tabasco. This is a keeper!

This was so delicious I have been craving it ever since I finished the last triple batch I made;-) A must have in any recipe book. You can also cut back on the brown sugar and it's just as good. I used the canned great northern beans from Bush's to eliminate the need to soak beans overnight.

Awesome! Just like grandma used to make. I reduced the brown sugar slightly to 1/3 cup. And a pinch (maybe 1/2 tsp) of baking soda makes the beans creamy and much less gassy.

My family loves this recipe. The sweetness, coupled with a little fiery kick (I add a little extra cayenne pepper!) is delicious. I usually buy an inexpensive ham hock and the flavor is great. Thanks for sharing this easy slow-cook dish.

My husband had been craving this and I had never made it before. I don't know what I was afraid of. It was very easy and tasty. Just what my husband wanted. I did let this simmer for like 3 hours. I used ham from the deli and tobasco sauce since I was out of cayenne pepper. Very good. I will make this again.

We enjoyed this recipe. It is simple to put together with everyday ingredients. I used a whole pound of ham since I made this as the main dish. Also cut back and used only 1/4 cup brown sugar. Served with a side of chopped spinach. Reheated the leftovers with the spinach mixed in and that was a nice combination of flavors and textures.

I've made this recipe many times since my original review a couple of years ago, but today I made a change! My husband wanted to see how it would taste with smoked sausage instead of ham, so I made a half recipe to try it out. I accidentally used the "Hot" smoked sausage with jalapenos so it turned out pretty spicy (which is ok for us because we like spicy). It was still very good, and is still one of my favorite comfort foods. Oh, and I added a couple of diced carrots -- just for color. :-)

Good recipe, loved the taste and how easy it was. The only problem I had was it wasn't quite thick enough for me. I'll try adding a little flour next time to see if that helps.
