This was my first time to make beans that weren't out of a can. Due to health concerns and other reviews, I left out the brown sugar. I don't know if it was because of that, but it was just tasteless. After cooking the ham so long, it lost its flavor completely. I think next time, I will try to add kielbasa or smoked sausage the last half hour of cook time. This site also recommends that you add the salt and pepper after the beans are done cooking, otherwise the flavor will be boiled away. They were right!
