very good, I only added 1/2 c of brown sugar after reading other reviews. Made in slow cooker with veggies on the bottom & a bottle of Guiness, I could detect no beer flavor. Beef was very moist and veggies flavorable. Would make again.

This was pretty good. The first few bites were great, but then it started to taste a little bit too salty. I dont know if that is how corned beef usually as, as i have never had it before last night.

Excellent! I tried this for the first time this weekend for a large gathering. Like some of the other reviewers I also did the old standby just in case. However this is the one that was raved about by all. I used a couple more bottles of the Guinness stout as my brisket was about 6 1/2 pounds. I put a little bit of spicey musturd on top before adding the brown sugar and topped it off with raw onion. Covered with tin foil and didn't touch it for 4 hours. Then added the veggies and covered again, put it back in for another hour and perfect.

Planned to take this to a St. Patricks Day party at work, and everyone loved it - said it was the best Corned Beef they'd ever had! I did make one modification to the recipe - I used 1/2 c. of brown sugar instead of a full cup because I really don't care for sweet meat. The 1/2 c. turned out to be perfect, and the Guinness taste was more prominent! LOVED IT!!!

I was hoping for a heavy Guinness taste, however it didn't end up that way after 11 hours in the slow cooker. I was more then happy to sink my teeth into what the recipe made however. It had a perfect blend of sweetness with the flavor of corned beef, and while the heavier notes of Guinness tended to vanish, it was absolutely delicious. My wife who I couldn't even tell her Guinness was in the recipe until after she tried it thought it was spectacular. We're in agreement here, this is our new St. Patty's tradition!

VERY, VERY GOOD!!! Thanks for a great recipe! I will always make my corned beef this way from now on. I cooked it in the slow cooker for 9 hrs., the last hour I turned it up on high, and added the cabbage wedges. I fixed Diane`s Colcannon & the Amazingly Easy Irish Soda Bread for the meal. EVERYONE LOVED IT!!!

This was my first time ever making corned beef and cabbage for St. Patrick's Day, and this recipe was SO good! I cooked it in my crock pot on low for 7 hours, adding the potatoes for the last 2-1/2 hours, and the cabbage for the last hour. Next time I think I'll steam the cabbage separately, because it soaked up too much of the Guinness and my kids didn't like it so much. Otherwise, this meal turned out perfect! I made corned beef hash with the leftover meat and potatoes today for lunch.

This was excellent - I don't think I will make it any other way again. Used about 1/4 of the sugar. Put the carrots in as a base for the corned beef, and cooked on low for about 6 hours, then added big chunks of potatoes. Added the cabbage quarters after another hour, and they did not take long to cook. I am not a fan of Guiness, but I did not really taste it, even in the veggies. Great recipe!

Very good - but very sweet. I followed another reviewers recipe and put in 6 red potatoes, 1/2 head of wedged cabbage and 4 carrots at the bottom of the crock pot w/ the beef on top. Added 1 can of Guinness and 1 cup of water w/ 1 cup of brown sugar. Next time I'll half the sugar --- too sweet for our taste. As leftovers the next day, sliced the beef and put on Kaiser Rolls w/ packaged cole slaw mixed w/ Thousand Island dressing - SUPER TASTY!!!

Though I'm a grandmother and very Irish, I had never made corned beef & cabbage, but decided to this St. Patrick's Day (2009). I found this recipe as well as others and decided to try this one and one other. Had a party of 19 and all agreed, hands down, that this was the best. Not the best of mine, but the best ever! I slow-cooked it for 8 hours on low. I then removed it and put in halved red potatoes and cabbage for 2 more hours. My cooker is 6 1/2 quarts and couldn't fit everything at once. I removed the potatoes and put the corned beef back in for a while to heat it up again, then sliced and served. Even the little kids loved it. I also used 2 bottles of guinness and 1 bottle of water. I was very skeptical of the brown sugar. Don't ask me how it all works, but it does and the corned beef tastes like corned beef, not sugar or beer. I won't be looking further...this is the recipe for me. Serve with home-made brown bread and irish butter and you'll think you're in Killarney, I promise!

Great recipe! I cooked for 8 hours on low in the crockpot using 24 ounces of Guiness and about half of the spice packet that came with the beef. This made a wonderful main course and great sandwiches for the few leftovers. Will make again!

This was very good. I couldn't find a "single" bottle of Guinness beer, and since no one in my family drinks beer, I had to find a different beer to use. I ended up using 18 oz of Heineken and I also added 1 cup of gingerale. I cooked the cabbage, potatoes, carrots and onions along with the corned beef all together in my crockpot for 9 1/2 hours and it was very tender and almost falling apart delicious. I would definitely make this again.

I love this recipe, as a starting point. I think everyone on here has altered this recipe in their own way, which makes it amazing. I changed it in so many ways, but the outcome was delicious. First, instead of Guinness stout, I used two cans of Guinness Draft, way better flavor. Second change was I, like so many others on here, used a slow cooker. Third, after rubbing it down with the brown sugar and placing the meat in the slow cooker I then sprinkled the prepacked seasoning all over it. After that I completely submerged the meat in the Guinness and let it cook overnight for about 12 hours before adding an onion, a head of cabbage and a bag of baby carrots to let it cook for another four to five hours. The finished product is amazingly tender and it tasted so good that no one at my party could stop eating it all night. It makes me want to make this for other get togethers, not just St. Patty's.

I'm not sure what I was expecting with this recipe,I followed the directions to the letter, but wasn't impressed with this.I cooked it the day before, cooled it,put it in the fridge, brought it back up to temp on St.Pats Day.The br.sugar melted off and the Guiness didn't do anything for it.Won't try again.sorry.

I ruined a perfectly good corned beef on this recipe. My son made a special trip to the store to buy the Guinness so I could do the recipe exactly as it was written and we were very disappointed. I am so glad I didn't do this for a party because I would have been too embarassed to serve it to my guests. I deleted this from my recipe box.

I tried two ways, this one and another on this site. This one gets 1 star because it was bitter and dry and tough by donig it in the oven as called for. My other turned out perfect. Needles to say I have almost the entire recipe left over but the other one got eatn right away.
